This year, Chung Yeung Festival will be celebrated on October 17, a public holiday (NOT on the Mainland).

. . .

The festival is known as the Double Ninth Festival on mainland China as it falls on the ninth day of the ninth lunar month. “Chung Yeung” literally means “double masculinity”. This is because the number nine is traditionally regarded as a yeung – or masculine – integer.

Because the Cantonese word gau represents a long period of time, and is a homonym for “nine”, the festival carries the auspicious meaning of longevity. On the mainland, the government in 1989 declared the festival “Seniors’ Day” to promote love and respect for the elderly.

Chung Yeung Festival around the world in 2021

from officeholiday.com

The festival of Chung Yeung commemorates a legend from the Han Dynasty (BC 202- AD 220) that states that a soothsayer advised the Woon King to take his family to high place for the entirety of ninth day of the ninth moon.

When the King and his family returned home, they found all the townspeople who hadn't gone to a high place had died.

It is now considered good luck to travel to a high place on the ninth day of the ninth moon, the Chung Yeung Festival.

A traditional custom on this day is to fly kites, as it is said that kites can carry bad luck up into the sky.

Today is the #DoubleNinthFestival or #ChongyangFestival. We have a custom of #hiking to exercise our body. #Nanning’s Daming Mountain(大明山) is a nice choice. It has high mountains, steep cliffs and slopes, deep valleys, lush forests and crossing streams. #nature #travel

October 23rd is the 2023 Chinese Chongyang Festival, or Double Ninth Festival. The festival  falls on the ninth day of the ninth month on the Chinese lunar calendar. In Chinese folklore, the number nine is the largest number - it's a homonym to the Chinese word jiu, which contains the auspicious meaning of "a long and healthy life".

It includes many traditions like climbing to high places, admiring chrysanthemum flowers, drinking chrysanthemum wine, eating Chongyang cake and caring for the elderly.
