World's largest airplane

Recommended Posts

This was reported in the Global Times (https://www.facebook.com/globaltimesnews/posts/1085047464909486)- the plane is actually Ukrainian. inherited after the break-up of the Soviet Union. There's an interesting story of its history, dating back to 1988, on Wikipedia.

Apparently, it's still getting around (Bush airport is Houston's Intercontinental Airport, named after Bush 41).

World's biggest airplane lands at Bush airport

The Antonov AN-225 Mriya was following an Airbus A320 on its approach to the runway. And despite being about five miles behind the other plane, they appeared to be the same size.

. . .

Bush Intercontinental will sporadically host the AN-225. On Sunday, it came from Goose Bay Airport in Canada and landed in Houston. It then continued to several South American airports before returning to Houston on Thursday to pick up a load of cargo. Its next destination is Miami, then back to South America.

Apparently, there was only one.

The world's largest cargo plane, Ukraine's Antonov An-225 Mriya, was destroyed by Russian forces during the "special military operation" in #Ukraine, said Ukraine's state defense conglomerate Ukroboronprom, which manages Antonov, on Sunday on Telegram.

World's largest cargo plane An-225 Mriya destroyed in Ukraine

The aircraft was destroyed in an attack by Russian troops on the Hostomel airport outside Kiev, and restoration of the plane would cost an estimated $3 billion over five years, Ukroboronprom added.

A tweet from the Antonov Company said there has been no independent confirmation of the aircraft's destruction, and it could not verify the "technical condition" of the aircraft until it had been inspected by experts.

The An-225 Mriya, designed and built in the 1980s by the Kiev-based Antonov company, is the longest and the heaviest airplane ever built. It first took flight in 1988 and has been in service ever since.
