Appearances Could Deceive at Shanghai Auto Show

Step into the capacious 2013 Shanghai Auto Show and you could be forgiven for confusing the Chinese brands with the foreign. New cars from Geely, Chery, BYD and Great Wall are better-looking than ever. At a glance, they seem poised to wrestle customers away from perennial market leaders like VW, Toyota and Hyundai.

. . .

Chinese car makers’ share of the domestic market is at its lowest level in five years. Northeast China’s FAW Car Co. Ltd. reported a loss in 2012, while Shenzhen-based BYD’s profits dropped 94% last year. Other Chinese automakers find themselves under severe financial pressure, too.

Global brands now account for more than 7 of 10 new car sales — an annoying fact for policy-makers in Beijing, who have been trying since the 1980s to create China’s own car brand champions.

At this week’s auto show, we’re sure to see some fine-looking Chinese cars, many with world-class presentations that look great from the C-suite. But it’s what’s under the shimmering hood that still counts most.

For evidence, just take a look at what car brands China’s most sophisticated buyers are driving.

To be fair: The engineer may very well be better... but one should not overlook the basic point that they want to simply "look good"; Appearances...
