Since I have the body pretty much done I've turned my attention back to the neck. I've been busy studying how to do it and making templates for the head stock and bridge. The other day I cut the slot for the two way adjustable truss rod. Today I dug out my fancy LMI manual fret slotting machine and after much checking, rechecking and triple checking to make sure I was doing it right, I cut the fret slots in the fingerboard. I was extra careful since this is one area of lutherie where there is no such thing as close enough. Tolerances for fret spacing have to be within two thousands of an inch for tone accuracy. The fingerboard is made out of Ziricote, a tropical hardwood found in southern Mexico, Guatemala and Belize.

I need to radius the fret board to 16 inches then cut the dovetail on the neck and body, carve the neck, glue on the fingerboard, hammer in the frets then begins the painstaking process of setting up the neck.

I imagine setting up the frets and getting the spacing exact is where a lot of novices make their first big mistake. It is just incredible how precise things have to be. I really admire your talent and your patience, Carl. I have really enjoyed watching this project unfold.

You'd think that a guitar maker's first prototype wouldn't be perfect. But from what you're showing us so far Carl, it appears that you are painstakingly attempting and succeeding in perfecting your build.

So, what are your plans to do with the finished product? Will you give it to a professional to field test and/or critique its quality?
