Come to think of it, I took a couple of machine shop classes when 19 of basic lathe and basic mill. Before we were allowed on the machines we were given a flat piece of steel plate a hack saw, and a file. We had to make a square and triangle and it had to be within 0.001" of an inch tolerance at any point along the surfaces compared to a templete. What is amazing is you can do it by hand. I was in awe as I used to wonder how do they get machines more and more precise. Amazing what you CAN DO with your hands. By the way, I did it, and got an "A". It is good when old guys challange and push us young ones to limits so we prove to ourselves what we can do. I know your in the wood business so your an example to many. 1 Link to comment

warpedbored Posted February 12, 2013 Author Report Share Posted February 12, 2013 Today I made what I consider major progress. Cut the dovetail joint on the neck and body. I've been putting this off out of fear. Do it wrong and many hours of work is ruined. Like every other difficult step in this project if I wasn't sure I was ready to proceed I put it off and studied more how to do it. l practiced yesterday on a big piece of basswood and after 3 trial and error attempts finally felt confident enough to do it on the guitar. It took a couple of hours to fine tune the fit but it came out fine. Now I know why so many luthiers use a bolt on neck but hell I'm a woodworker, I like joinery and a dovetail neck joint is traditional. Now I'll start carving the neck, drill the tuner holes hammer in the frets and make the bridge and saddle. http://oi49.tinypic.com/xf6sfq.jpg Link to comment

I love the detail and the dovetail work. Heck, I don't even use a router, all of my woodwork gets covered over, and about as fancy I get is hangin' trim....and even that gets tied in with Wenyan caulking and painting it....lol I look at your work which every single detail gets scrutinized in the open and shake my hed in complete awe. tsap seui 1 Link to comment

Urkidding Posted February 13, 2013 Report Share Posted February 13, 2013 Carl, My 1st job is in computers... after a long day of looking at screens, answer calls, counting numbers, etc. etc... I look forward to doing something else...completely different, at that would be woodworking. I love it. I use to have a (and still do) bunch of wood working stuff like you. Heck, I couldn't help myelf this last Christmas and go out and buy a new nailer, table saw and a few other items that were "on sale". The problem that I have is getting into a big project and something taking over my spare time...like my son. Oh, I'm not complaining but I will say that when I retire I will have a garage full of stuff...that will be out dated - again!
