However I cannot figure out how to call them to check on the status. Any advice? Phone numbers and extensions? Link to comment

Email, Mail, and Fax. http://guangzhou.usembassy-china.org.cn/contactiv.html Email is best, they do respond, typically within a fed days. Link to comment
