knloregon
Obama's deep bow to the Emperor of Japan------So Xinhuanet. first shows it, now its not there, or at least, I can't find it..... Can imagine why that is exactly the kind of gesture that official news agencies in China want to suppress---- While the Right in the US has a field day with it politically. Candle's thoughts on this-----or any other aspect of the trip, to date.... ...but one good thing among a lot os speech making----Obama pledges to raise the number of US Students in China to 100,000. Normally I wouldnt be so cracked up about all the bows. But I think we have some making up to do with the international community. So given the circumstances, I am for it. Good for him. dnoblett
As the leader of the only super power in the world he should be bowing to no one. This is the second time he has done this. Link to comment
warpedbored
If the media knew anything about Japanese culture they would know that bowing is a gesture of respect much like a handshake. One should always bow deeper to an elder or someone in a higher position. I've seen Japanese do what looks like a bowing contest with each trying to bow deeper than the other. To me it means nothing more than Obama taking the time to learn a little about their culture. I'm sure the anti Obama crowd will try to make it look like he is submitting. At least he didn't stand up on world wide television next to the Japanese prime minister and tell China they should emulate Taiwan like his predecessor did. Link to comment

Ah, this reminds me of the chest-thumping bravado of the Bush administration. That worked well didnt it? Link to comment

Bad habits are really hard to break. Posted by a real American. Edited November 17, 2009 by Tony n Terrific (see edit history) Link to comment
warpedbored
I just watched the video. What he did was proper. Notice that he bowed deeper to the Emperor than the Empress. it was also a quick bow which shows they are equals. If it was a prolonged bow it would show he is lower in status. It is good foreign policy to show respect for other people's culture when you are on their soil. http://www.politico.com/news/stories/1109/29529.html Link to comment

Guest Tony n Terrific
We are Americans we do not bow to anyone! Good foreign policy comes from strength. Not from a courtsey. What makes me so upset since the Cold War has ended is that we Americans have let our Great Nation nation slip into mediocritcy. Link to comment
knloregon
I voted for Obama, and I still think he's a good president but on this issue, heres the problem: He taught Constitutional law.... He knows that the core documents of our nation clearly delineate between rule by divine right----a monarch or an emperor, and our system----rights vested in, and reserved by the people. this really was the American Experience during our own revolution to overthrow the monarch of England---oppression by a monarch, asserting rule by divine right. And since at least the end of the war of 1812, formal diplomatic protocol has REQUIRED that no American president EVER bows to the king (or queen) of England. If we respect the rule of separation---church and state, this protocol should extend to all who would, and in the case of Japan in WW2----seek to assert political control from divine intervention. and btw, Obama's gesture hasn't been entirely overlooked by all in China---some, including my niece, picked up on it, and were offended, given the history of Japan's occupation of China.
