My dad has an IS-350 so this Consumerist article caught my eye this morning. Tragic 911 call. Very disturbing. The Consumerist posters are repeatedly asking why the driver just didn't turn the car off. Well crap, I know my dad wouldn't think of that. Anyway, it's a push button on the IS.

Unfortunately, that recall hardly laid the issue to rest. On 28 August 2009, California Highway Patrol Officer Mark Saylor and three members of his family tragically lost their lives on a highway near San Diego California, while driving a 2009 ES350 loaned to them by a local Lexus dealer. While the investigation into that accident is, as of this writing, still ongoing, preliminary information from law enforcement investigators indicates that the cause may have been an all-weather floor mat from a different Lexus model which, if installed incorrectly in the ES350, could cause it to interfere with the accelerator pedal.

Should owners choose not to remove their floor mat, Toyota strongly recommends that they ensure that the correct floor mat is being used, that it is properly installed and secured (see the illustration at the top of this story), that it is not flipped over with bottom-side up, and that one floor mat is not stacked over another.

Not to be cold about their loss, but for me, it will (hopefully) mean a new floor mat

There is no recall currently, just a safety advisory. I took my mat out of my Prius as soon as I heard the news story. Then when I was in for service last saturday I asked about the recall and they said there wasn't one yet. They did say that even if you had the correct mat they were advising removing it until they actually determine the final solution.

I only choose brand new American cars to buy. Enough steel used, feel secure---also contributes to American industry. My next car will be a solar energy environmental protection car.
