NewDay2006
My passport was taken everytime I stayed in a hotel, one visit I stayed with my wife at her apartment. I didn't like it because they had a Chinese toilet... her sister had a western toilet... she always knew why I wanted to go there
danb
Hello, it is the law that you are registered either by the Hotel that you are staying at or down at the PBS. It is your choice to do it or not, but you may suffer consequences if you are catch and had failed to do it. What will happen if you are robbed or are involed in an accident and the police check your paperwork? You are a guest in their country. IMHO, you wife or SO may not know what is required or is not required. How many foreigner have visited her before? None probably. How much did we know about laws and regulation of foreigners visiting us in the states until we meet our SO? Not much probably. Danb Having said all that I have not registered on my previous trips but I plan to on any future trips to China. The laws may also be enforced more hardily during times such as the Olympics, Shanghai World Fair, the 60th Birthday celebration next month in Beijing, etc and perhaps in places such as Tibet and Xinjiang.
