China calls Xinjiang riot a plot against rule

 

BEIJING (Reuters) - China says a riot that shook the capital of western Xinjiang region Sunday was a plot against its power, after at least three people died in the eruption of ethnic unrest and authorities launched a crackdown.

 

Hundreds of locals took to the streets of the regional capital, Urumqi, some burning and smashing vehicles and confronting ranks of police and anti-riot troops.

 

The riot followed a protest in Urumqi against government handling of a late June clash between Han Chinese and Uighur factory workers in far southern China, where two Uighurs died in Shaoguan.

 

Monday morning "the situation was under control," the state-run Xinhua news agency reported. There were no immediate reports of violence in other parts of Xinjiang.

What's damned interesting, is that CNN is reporting more than 100-killed. All other news outfits have the number at three (3). Typical.

What is the source?

 

Big if it holds up. particularly since PRC classically underreports the activities of the Uighur separatists .

 

Case in point: Two summers ago, Sister inlaw and niece traveled to Xinjiang on summer vacation, there meeting former business associates (Han) who had relocated for the opportunities in the vast and beautiful region. Turns out, five of these Han businessmen went hunting---but only one returned. The other four were beheaded by Uighurs.

 

You won't find that in any news source that I'm aware of, Chinese or Western. But it certainly indicates the influence of outside Muslim terrorist training.

 

Another case in point: Gitmo. Three years ago, the US wanted to release several Uighurs picked up in Afghanistan during the first go-around. (US didn't have enough evidence to hold them in Gitmo).

 

China said: Sure we'll take em back---- they are trained terrorists, and we plan to execute them.. Us wouldn't have any of that, so they were released to a third country. Same thing just happened in the latest Uighur Gitmo release.

 

Yes, China is without the Rule of Law, but it also doesn't release terrorists to kill again.

In this case, I don't believe either one. Though, CNN has a long history of latching on to what it considers "human rights" stories. This might give CNN an excuse to break away from Michael Jackson coverage; course, I don't think their audience would appreciate it.

 

That number came from some obscure blogger somewhere, who made the statement of some 80,000 unreported riots happening every year in China.

 

It is impossible to tell. China no longer publishes the figures for how many riots take place each year, but most people put the figure at around 80,000 and the vast majority go totally unnoticed.

Death toll in Xinjiang riot rises to 140

 

URUMQI: The death toll has risen to 140 following Sunday night's riot in Urumqi, capital of northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, the regional government said Monday.

 

Fifty-seven dead bodies were retrieved from Urumqi's streets and lanes, while all the others were confirmed dead at hospitals, said Liu Yaohua, the region's police chief, at a press conference midday Monday.

He said the death toll would still be climbing.

 

At least 828 people were injured in the deadly violence that erupted Sunday night.

 

Rioters burned 261 motor vehicles, including 190 buses, at least 10 taxis and two police cars, said Liu.

 

As of 9 am, several vehicles were still seen ablaze on Urumqi's streets he said.

 

A preliminary investigation showed 203 shops and 14 homes were destroyed in the riot.

 

Police have arrested several hundred in connection with the riot, including at least a dozen who were suspected of fanning the unrest, Liu said.

 

He said police are still searching for about 90 other key suspects in the city. "Police have tightened security in downtown Urumqi streets and at key institutions such as power and natural gas companies and TV stations to prevent large-scale riots."

 

Checkpoints have been set up in Urumqi's key areas as well the neighboring Changji and Turpan prefectures to prevent the rioters from fleeing, Liu said.

 

He said more than 100 ethnic officials from adjacent areas have been transferred to Urumqi for interrogating the suspects according to law.

The count currently is 156 dead, up from 140 this morning, but we all know it is a lot higher than that! Probably over 200, probably way over!

Is there anything unpredictable about this? Is there even one person in all of China that doesn't know what happens when you decide to upset social harmony? The Uighers may have a legitimate complaint, but they also know what happens when you handle your complaints in this fashion. Right or wrong..this was the predictable response.

Jin says the Han will endure its in their nature. retribution will happen but they are patient.
