A mother's journey from hope to horror

A sad story

"An interpreter crouched next to Chi Xue-fang's wheelchair, quietly translating the courtroom proceedings to the immigrant mother. Her ankles were shackled, her legs too weak to walk. As legal terms such as "mental competency" and "murder charge" were decoded into Mandarin, the slender Chinese woman looked ahead with a blank stare.

She had high hopes when she joined her husband in this country two years ago, but then her life collapsed. At the court hearing last month, she sat accused of killing one of her two daughters, along with her 7-month-old fetus, and nearly herself in a bloody rampage that was as horrific as it was perplexing."

Sad story and one that is difficult for westerners to understand. We had a woman here in Portland recently that threw her two children off of a bridge into the Willamette river because she didn't want her estranged husband to have them. The boy drowned and the girl lived. I have heard of this happening a number of times in Asian cultures. Particularly Japan.

What a depressing story. I feel sorry for the woman. The system let her down. The system is largely to blame for this womans demise for not heeding her mentality and Chinese upbringing. They, the system, failed to see it and failed to recognize it. They competely failed this poor woman. It saddens me, I am sad for her. God bless her! I sincerely mean that.

i really hate to read these types of reports, doubly so because this was a 'follow' family - both prc people.

girlfriend, indeed. I pray the wife can recover...

It says it in the story: By mid-April, Chi resorted to behavior not uncommon among rural Chinese women faced with family disgrace: She sought to end her life. And she apparently wanted to take her children with her.

Why didn't a competent psychologist, maybe with some knowledge of the Chinese ways, recognize this and had her committed before she caused the onslaught that she did? It should have been recognized. Someone should sue the city for this incompetence.

In the article - this was covered. She had shied away from keeping appointments for mental stuff. Now, each 'place' as a psychiatric sherrif on call 24/7 - so it's possible to get a sherrif in to escort her to a ward for prolonged evaluation - but - no one around her thought to make the phone call. FWIW, I think her 'reactions' were due to the treatment she got from her husband. What a gonif !

It wasn't the husband who needed the help. It was his wife. And civil service failed!...sit back and think that one out. Think it out real hard! Then maybe you can get an idea of how the woman felt. Just maybe!

No one thought at all! I'll say it again; they failed her.

Read this blurb from the story: [by mid-April, Chi resorted to behavior not uncommon among rural Chinese women faced with family disgrace.]

This came out from the story and this is where they failed her. I could write a book on it but I'll leave it at that. You all can use your own imagination to decipher it out.

It's a really sad state of affairs which infuriates me because of the gross incompetence displayed by the civil service in handling this case. They are to blame. They could've helped this woman and saved her from killing her children but it slipped right by them all. Fools!
