MR COFFEE or best replacement

Recommended Posts

I have been looking for an automatic drip coffee maker in GUZ, I have seen several in the department stores, but they are very pricey$$$. The least expensive one I found so far, was $120 usd. I saw an expresso machine, over $5,000rmb. Is there a place where you can buy something like this, at US prices? I have not been able to find one of those "wholesale" markets where things are priced more fairly for the coffee maker. We have been able to find "places" to buy many different things, at much lower prices, except for the coffee maker. Any help would be appreciated, Mike & Yizhen

Have you considered instant coffee? I know that may sound a bit absurd, especially if you're conditioned to drinking a cup of joe. But, even if you buy a coffee maker in China, where are you going to find the coffee to put in it? I suppose you can find a place or two in a big city like Guz.

We have a store here in Nanjing, called Metro. I've seen several coffee makers there, and even fresh coffee beans. Never really thought much about buying one though, as I'm drinking green tea these days; actually prefer it to coffee now.

For some odd ball reason coffee is higher then the sky in China. My 1st trip here last year I got a cup off coffee in Shanghai and they socked me about $4.75 or 35 RMB for a cup of instant coffee.

Good luck in finding a coffee maker. Maybe try Walmart.

Is there a Metro store in Guangzhou? I've found good prices on theings there, but never a coffee machine. We use a French Press in XMN and an old fashioned percolator here in the states. I was working in the Darien and took a nice stainless steel percolator to a friend there. When I returned home it really bugged me not having good coffee. I was using the same beans I brought home from Panama but it wasn't the same...that is until I bought a good percolator from Cabela's. Good luck! ZZ

Mike, aside from the coffee maker discussion we had a couple of days ago, I forgot to add; if you want a very good American style donut, go to the Marriott China Hotel in downtown. At the second floor restaurant, behind the cashier's desk, are the very best donuts in all of GZ; they are as good as any you will get with that cup of coffee, here in the USA.

Thanks all, I really want the coffee maker to brew my tea. I use my Mr. Coffee to brew a pot and a half or two everyday in the US. I gave up grinding and brewing STARBUCKS coffee in 1995, when I switched to green tea, the doctor took me off of the blood pressure meds I was taking for 3 years. Yizhen and I will brew a pot of starbucks from grounds I keep in the freezer, maybe once a month just for the taste, but we drink green tea daily. We spent 2 days shopping for green tea here in GUZ, and I think we found our new "favorite" green tea (TIE GUANYIN). I had been drinking a special tea (TIE GUANYIN) that Yizhen's sister and her husband gave us, on Sundays, but we ran out and we went to Chinatown to look, it was $150 per pound. Needless to say, that is out of our daily budget. Later we found a similar tea that tasted even better, at a chinese wholesale market in Chicago. We shop at this market, but had never looked at the tea before. This new tea was $4.50 for 1/2KG, 1.1lbs. The next time we went to this market the tea was gone and a new one was in it's place, $9 for 1/2KG., and it was not as good. We found a better tea of the same variety, for $56rmb per KG about $3.77 per lb. at the wholesale tea market in GUZ. This is a primo tea, we tried many at twice the price, but this tea was our favorite. There some very good teas at half the price, but this is $1.2 per lb. less than I was paying for my daily tea over the last 5 years. AND I AM WORTH IT! I was thinking about 10 kg's, and the wife said we should bring back 15kg's.

Next time we come to China, we will bring our own Mr. Coffee! Problem solved. I hope you didn't mind my long winded tale of tea, thanks, Mike & Yizhen
