Child to attend interview?

I'm sponsoring my wife and son with the I-130.

 

When the interview date comes, will the child be asked to sit in on the interview? Would the child be questioned at all?

You are filing TWO I-130's correct one for wife and one for son, unless son is a US Citizen by birth?

 

Child may be interviewed if over a set age.

Correct. Two I-130s, My wife and her son. Son is 7 years old and speaks just a tiny bit of English that was learned in school. Wife speaks English very well.

Your son must attend the interview but your wife must go with him. They will usually ask the child a couple of simple questions, but usually nothing more than polite conversation. Your wife will be handling the interview for both of them as far as paperwork and relationship questions.

My daughter age 12, attended the interview with my wife. Although she stood next to my wife at the interview window, she was not asked a single question by the VO.

They ask my son where I was and he responded with "downstairs drinking coffee". According to my wife the VO enjoyed the response.

Due to circumstances I'm pretty sure I cannot be in China when my wife has her interview. Would this cause a problem?

Assuming your wife is there, no. But they have been known to deny visas to children with neither parent there.

 

In one case, a child was denied whose parents where there, but had been denied access to the 5th floor by the Chinese guards.

Usually the interview for CR-1 and CR-2 are done together, when the P-4's arrive if there are different dates you can email GUZ and get the interviews put together on the same date to avoid issues. It is easier for GUZ to do both at once as the evidence will all come from mom for both cases.
