Learning Mandarin

Recommended Posts

I got a FTA satellite system working this weekend. I have several options for channels of Chinese interest but, I am not sure what is spoken on them. I am almost certain CCTV will be mandarin. Some cahnnels are taiwan based though. Does anyone know if they speak mandarin in taiwan. It sounds a little different and I am not catching many words. I do not want to confuse myself listening to the wrong dialect than what Rosetta Stone teaches. unsure.gif

Good Job on the DVB system ! I've had a monster before, now I just have one set up with small motor for changing the satellites.

Usually, if you see 'TVB' - that's from Taiwan. Yes, is a different bit of dialect, but mostly mandarin...

Singapore broadcasts several 'all chinese' channels, but unless it's the local news, can't guarantee it's 100 percent 'pure' mandarin - they 'bring over' many shows from PRC, Taiwan, etc...

I'll post the listing from sadoun satellite website - it's useful...

Here's the master list:

The 'bigger' list for North America -

Good Luck !!!

Taiwan is a society in flux. The majority speaks Mandarin as a first language, but most of them came over from Mainland China. Of the minorities, there is one (Hakka) that seemed to accept the Mandarin language, and there is one minority (Minnan -- came over from Fujian province that) doesn't. This goes back to pre-WWII from 1895-1945 when Japan ruled Taiwan, and the Minnan people supported the Japanese in oppressing the Hakka. Then there are the true aborigines (usually called the Mountain Folk) that have more in common with Polynesia and the New Zealand Maori than China. As a result of the Japanese rule, there is a generation of Taiwanese whose first language is Japanese.

I know you didn't ask for a history lesson. The point is that the Taiwan channels *should* be Mandarin, and most likely are Mandarin with a Taiwan accent (which makes the SH, CH, ZH sound like S C Z), but on any given channel, someone might be speaking Minnan or Hakka for political reasons.

Former President Chen Shuibian was of the Minnan heritage, and often gave speeches in Minnan language to prove his authenticity and irritate the Mainlanders.

Minnan people will tell you that they are the native Taiwans and their langauge is the true native language. Unfortunately, history shows that the Hakka arrived at pretty much the same time, so the insistence of Minnan culture is more due to cultural chauvinism and competition rather than fact.

John - FTA = Free to Air. Usually means no cipher block on the video signal . If you have rabbit ears antenna for your tv, well, that, in it's basic form, is FTA.

There are satellite receivers (No, Not DishNetwork, Not DirectTV) that are set up to receive FTA signals from the FTA broadcasters.

IF you google 'FTA satellite' over at www.google.com - you'll see a ton o info.

Warmest Regards...

I settled on Galaxy3c and the CCTV channels it has. CCTV4 is chinese CCTV9 is english.(they also have french and spanish)

It sounds like mandarin most of the time. i was watching something last night that sounded different and was subtitled in simplified chinese. I suspect they were speaking cantonese. i think that is still most common in the studio districts of HongKong(Jackie Chans native tongue I believe)

Thanks for the Info, but in my reading, it sounds like it only works for the computer. Does it work for the TV too?

Thanks :yahoo:

For Computer? What ? No No, John - was always about 'The TV'. FTA started 'for the TV'. For satellite - you'll need a Digital Video box and a 30 inch satellite dish. ya connect that INTO yer TV.

Try this website for starters. http://www.sadoun.com

I bought a Sonicview 360. Fairly user freindly. You will need whats called a "linear" lnb dish. Directv and dishnetwork are "circular" LNB dishes. they can not recieve the signal from other satellites.
