Rising Buildings...

When we moved to Nanjing, my company was in the midst of opening a new office in the south part of town, away from the city central. Like most Chinese cities, it's growing fast. A few months ago, our community was situated between several vacant lots. I watched the opening ceremony for a new community to be built a few weeks after the move. One day, it was just a lot, with weeds and dirt. Today, there are no fewer than ten high-rise cranes on separate buildings. Each of these buildings are about ten stories tall now. The five story sales office for the community was completed in about two weeks, and opened for business. While there are reports of real-estate slow-downs in the rest of the world, it doesn't seem to be affecting China much.

Let's hope they are well built, and will not fall down in an earthquake.

I think the commercial and residential buildings in China are built well enough for an earthquake of moderate magnitude. For a biggie... Nope they'd all be rubble I suspect. But in the Sichuan earthquake many achools were very poorly built with NO REBAR... and they simply crumbled... :sosad: Tofu schools they called them... :(

Okay, my bad. I am truly curious though Roger. You've always been quite bothered by the economic growth and building boom in China. I too am bothered when I see the poor and hungry. People have wondered how to fix this and make it go away for generations. How would you suggest it be resolved? The only way I can see it getting fixed in any country is either by the rich giving willingly from their wealth, or having it taken away against their will.

That's where your narrow view of the world betrays you Jesse. There's another way. That's for some of that wealth to make it into the hands of the poor and middle class before it even makes it into the greedy hands of the rich through higher wages and less taxes on the former and a couple of million less in salary and golden parachutes for the latter. If they aren't getting it in the first place, they won't have to give it away or have it taken.

Okay Dave, take it easy now. Maybe it's your contention that anyone that fails to agree with you has a narrow view? To me, that seems quite narrow minded.

I would suggest that you spend a little time reading from the works of Carl Marx, Lennin, and other socialists to get a better view of their grand plans for people. There is indeed a sharp contrast between socialism and capitalism. No one has ever figured out a way to generate capital from every man, woman, and child. The truth is, it's a matter of, "From each according to his ability, and to each according to his need." It sounds like a good thing, that everyone will take care of everyone, and if you are smarter and work harder and make more, then you give more. It's just never worked.

No. Only people who tend to use words like "The ONLY way I see it getting fixed..." People who use phrases like that and who see ANY attempt to better the lives of the have-nots of the world as socialism and label those who dare to aspire to it as socialists are the narrow-minded IMHO.

I can't find it right now but I read an article earlier today that quoted someone as saying essentially "Most of the people throwing around these words wouldn't know true Socialism if it walked up and bit them in their means of production."

Rings pretty true IMO. :eatyum:

Dave, you have a view of resolving world problems with which I disagree. I don't believe that makes you narrow minded however. Just remember, that for every opinion you have, there is another that disagrees with you.

No person here could possibly believe this but you... :smoker:

On the next occasion in which I am so totally misrepresented... :P
