Travel with US Green Card and PRC Passport

Recommended Posts

A question for those members who have adjusted status, their Lao Po has her US Green Card, and you have traveled together internationally, to nations other than Canada and/or Mexico.

A friend opined, that once my wife gets her Green Card later next year, she will still not have the same status/privileges that I enjoy, when visiting other countries such as Japan. He offered that my wife’s PRC passport and US Green Card, will still require more approval steps for her, above and beyond mine with my US passport, before she can enter some other countries and he specifically mentioned Japan.

Any of you who travel internationally with your Chinese wife who has a PRC passport and US Green Card, have any issues when traveling to countries with her, other than contiguous Mexico and Canada ??

I understand that some countries require a visa along with the US passport, and would assume that that would also be true for a US Green Card holder, traveling under a non-US passport.

The only issues are that she WILL still need to apply for and have a Visa to visit any country that she needed one for before getting green-card other that (US, MEX, and the Caribbean).

A good guide to Visa requirements is here:

http://www.delta.com/planning_reservations...rt_information/

Enter Citizen: China, Resident: USA, and destination and any connecting country.

Then visit County's Consulate or Embassy's US website for information on Visa requirement, some will issue one on the spot when you arrive in their country, others require one to be in passport prior to boarding the flight, much like a US citizen needs before taking a direct flight to China.

For Japan see: http://www.timaticweb.com/cgi-bin/tim_webs...ubuser=DELTAB2C

Japan visa Exemption list: http://www.mofa.go.jp/j_info/visit/visa/02.html#a (PRC is NOT on the list)

Japan visa application: http://www.us.emb-japan.go.jp/english/html..._visa_index.htm

YES US Citizenship has it's privledges.

One last note, if making a connection at an airport in Japan with flight onward to China, NO visa needed, for example, NWA flight from Detroit to Beijing or Guangzhou makes a stop in Tokyo. http://www.timaticweb.com/cgi-bin/tim_webs...ubuser=DELTAB2C

Roger - sorry - she is still PRC citizen, so for ENTRY into other country, she needs a visa unless that country is on Visa Waiver Program with China (there ARE some, check it out).

The green card allows her re-entry into the USA without additional paperwork, but her entry stamp is IN the Chinese Passport.

I'm sorry, she's due for some additional work to get the entry/exit visas to the countries you want to visit. Luckily, she can apply for the visa(s) she needs here in the USA, as most of the countries have embassies here.

Your friend is right.

Thanks for the info guys !!

One would think, that when married to a USC and with GC in hand, and after that long process, there would be more rights and privileges ??

Therefore, it is clear to me what the next step is.....

Monday morning I will drive down to the Federal Building in Sacramento, and trade in Lao Po's PRC passport for a new blue USA passport !!!! :)

Don't, even try, Only US Citizens can get a nice shiny blue USA Passport. You will need to wait 3 years after getting the green-card, and then file N-400 to naturalize, and after it is approved, and the oath of citizenship is given, ONLY THEN you can apply for a US Passport for Lao Po using certificate of US naturalization.
