Those of you that have your wives in the USA now, how did ESL work in the school system for thier children?

Does the teacher teach them just the english part?

What about the other parts such as history, math, etc...

It is my thought that the instructor will not be able to conversate with my chid in Chinese, so again how does it work?

ESL is strictly English as Second Language. History, Math, etc.. is taught in English.

My wife has been taking ESL classes at the local community college, one class covered reading some novels, and writing reports, another focused on speaking English, she is now in a more advanced reading/writing class. The classes have people from all over that speak a diverse range of languages, the instructor speaks English only.

You will be surprised how quick children learn and adapt to school.

In California all new teachers are required to get an ESL Certification. There are many techniques to teaching ESL. Those techniques are also used in teaching other subjects. By using the ESL techniques, the child is still able to learn their core subjects like social studies, science, etc, as well learn the new language.

Each state sets their own requirements for teachers. Set up an appointment with your local school principle and ask about their program.

A big part of it, though, is sink-or-swim. He may have to repeat some classes if his understanding is not good enough. It's a good way to learn English, but maybe not so good for his other classes.

If he takes a class or two that he already has an understanding of, that may help the situation

This subject of language and education is important to many of us, I don't want to let this topic end on a negative note. Here is a link to a good paper on the subject: http://www.ncela.gwu.edu/pubs/symposia/third/spanos.htm

Here is another link to a site that has simple math/language worksheets: http://bogglesworldesl.com/kids_worksheets/math.htm

Here is another link to a site that has tips for teaching elementary science for English Language Learners:http://www.everythingesl.net/lessons/content_based_science_instruct_64209.php

For all of you guys out there with children and wives needing to learn English and (for the kids) keep up with content matter in other subjects, get in touch with your local school district. Also, there is a ton of information on the web that is available with very simple searches. Read up on it and help your own children and wives! Get involved with this. Put it on your "things to do before they arrive list."
