looking for a good internet translator?

I am looking for a good internet translator,for english to chinese,and chinese to english,I have been using "Google",but after i wrote a letter ,english to chinese, I re-translated from chinese back to english to see how well it translated,and it was like the translator had a mind of its own,Alot of the translation,was not at all what i wrote,or even close to what i was trying to say.....has anyone experienced this ? it seems if I just type in a few words at a time ,it translates ok,but when I type a few sentences, translation is downright weird, often not even making any sense.....and also when I put my wifes letter thru the translator,some of it,makes sense,other sentences absolutely weird,not making any sense.

I use alta vista babel fish, for short phrases. But I suggest you start learning chinese, these translators can only do so much. You might want to try out Kingsoft Powerword, you can hover over words with the mouse and it will show a translation of the character!

Babelfish does a better job if you use something approximating Chinese grammar in the English. You are right to translate it back and see what you get ... sometimes you can adjust the initial English a bit and get a much better rendering.

I think i just saw that the new version of Yahoo IM 9,0 beta will allow you to use Babelfish to do realtime exchange of IM with translation.

I still cazn't access babelfish and it's making me mad because I can't figure out why! I've used it for years and then last week all of a sudden it quit working. DO any of you computer pros have any idea why? It started last week and I've tried everything I know to rectify it. I must be overlooking som,ething. :mad:

I will have to check on this new yahoo IM 9.0, sounds good.....anyway,I am now working with the babelfish,it is good,I notice it works best,if you put in small phrases at a time,it translates well,and like someone eles was also saying,to phrase your words,like Chinese folks would say it.....i am getting the hang of it now.....like the song from the 80's. (the Vapors...Turning Japanese)........"I think i'm turning Chinese"

Yes,for anyone who does IM with their wife/girlfriend in China,I downloaded the new yahoo messenger 9.0...it is awesome,it translates in realtime outgoing and incoming messages........awesome !!!!!

I have been using Babelfish for quite a while, and the more Chinese I learn the better it gets. In addition to being able to "proof read" the rendered text somewhat, putting my English sentences into something approximating Chinese syntax helps a lot, too. I have also learned to avoid saying things like "hard" if I mean "difficult" because the machine translator doesn't know which one I mean.

 

But using a translator such as Babelfish is a great way to learn to read Chinese.

Make sure you save a copy of all your IM and emails. Also a log of your phone calls. Now that's ...awesome !!!!!
