rogerluli
But then, I wonder why the govt can't do it if they are spending so much on the military and going to the moon. I wonder the same thing about "OTHER" governments myself... Link to comment

I wonder the same thing about "OTHER" governments myself... I can certainly understand why a country would need to spend money on the military as it serves to protect the country. But this thinking about the moon???? I am not really sure about that one. Do they really think that we will eventually need to live there? Link to comment
Dennis143
http://talk.robertmao.com/2007/09/23/pictu...he-whole-china/ I know Dennis posted some pics a while back and I hope these are not the same ones... But even if they are they're worth looking at again... Some are and some aren't...you're right though Rog, they are powerful and they are worth looking at again. Why are they worth seeing? Why are they worth looking at? Why are they worth looking at again and again...? Personally, they tell me how much I have and how just a little that I give might bring someone just a little pleasure for just a while... What else can one do? I'll tell you though, the picture of the malnourished boy eating crumbs is truly heartbreaking. Link to comment
Joshua + Wang Zhuo
It is sad to see these photos. But, like some others said I can find you images of people in America that show just as much pain and suffering. It does not make it right, for sure, but it has existed throughout time and it will not cease any time soon. What can we do to make it better you ask? Continue to do what we are doing . It may sound crazy, but the fact of the matter is that China IS changing. 30 years ago China did not hardly have a middle class. I believe I read somewhere today that the "middle" class in China is over 50% of the population (if someone could find documentation on this, I would appreciate it). But, if today only 20% of the population lives as middle class it is still a marked improvement. Change does not happen overnight. It will likely not even happen during the lifetimes of many of those that are today suffering. America has had some growing pains too. It takes time to get better. What can we do to speed up the process? Don't stop caring. As long as people care, it will continue to get better. It is when people start to turn a blind eye towards the worlds problems that we will really have a problem. Joshua Link to comment

Joshua I think 50% must be wrong...I actually recently read 10%...I think your 20% guess is as good as any... Link to comment

First, it is a matter of National Pride, much like the Olympics next year. It is part of earning the coveted status of being a respected world player. Second, who knows what military or, well just military implications this represents. Look at NASA and its ties to the Military Industrial Complex. The common folk, the poor people, the masses are as inconsequential as they are anywhere else. I understand what you are saying. Sometimes I do not understand governments' priorities seeing as I am a common folk. But I do understand a nation taking steps to protect itself from others. Link to comment
