Dan R
The main reason we have improved sanitation in this country is because it is currently required for doctors treating food poisoning to tract the source and report to health departments and CDC. USDA monitors and or enforces recalls of tainted or adulterated products every month. Each month some employee foul up or company cost cutting kills in this country witthout any help from any other nationality. Because USDA monitors most meat and poultry production on a daily basis it is relatively safe. Most food poisoning involves retail or home level mishandling and produce. This is because produce (and seafood) are under the FDA. Since they have no system to monitor production or distribution, we are trusting these products to honesty, wisdom and attentiveness by the food handlers. Soon this will be the new and improved way of protecting meat and poultry products too. as congress continues to consider merging the two and has already reshaped much of USDA on a FDA model.
