LIFE Act sponsor

Recommended Posts

Anyone know who sponsored the LIFE Act? It's a helluva thing to actually get a bill passed on the hill. Are these people still in office? If there's anyone in government who will REALLY care about this issue it will be the original sponsors of this bill.

The LIFE act had little or nothing to do with K type visas in the sense that it was primarily a vehicle for illegal immigrants who in fact could qualify for legal status to reapply to get legal immigration status. This includes tens of thousands of people covered by 3 class action suits.

The original LIFE Act has in fact lapsed and been extended. It appears (from this press release) that all of the NY members of the House were sponsors. Someone here had previously posted about the waste of time it was to contact Senator Clinton, plus I dont think these people would be interested in helping someone who wasnt an illegal or from NY. Just my opinion. Also once the bill is passed it appears (from the first URL) that it is the INS (former) and DOS who set the 'real' rules of processing. Nothing in the act guarantees a fast, efficient or fair process.

Hmmm....

Well, who is it that made the K visa program happen? There has to be someone out there who cared enough to get it enacted. There is a very clear intent behind the K visa that's been lost in the implementation.

Also, the larger suggestion I was trying to initiate here is, I believe we are all acting here as small, disaggregated bands. I'm just one person who's annoying one individual in my congresswoman's office, who is in turn making an annoying call here or there to someone at the NVC/DOS who just wants to end the conversation. It's pretty easy to ignore us and get away with it.

But, as a small organized group, if we could find someone with position with real interest in this issue, then maybe something could really happen.

K visas are NOT being treated as non-immigrant visas. There is someone out there, besides us, who cares about it and can actually do something about it.

The K visas have been in existance now for the past 21/2 years. Must have been during the Clinton administration. Ashcroft had nothing to do with it!!! :redblob:

Robhon, you are right, but I'm not sure who it is, I'll try to find out. R2D2 you're right about the time and it may have been initiated during the Clinton years, but Bush wrote a memo on it, which I can't readily find, similar to this Powell memo which was supposed to implement the LIFE Act. Notice the memo date and what happened 4 days later:

Looks like I'm unable to get the link to work, so maybe you'll have to paste. Of particular interest is Items 19 & 25. The LIFE Act apparently is no longer in effect, but the new Immigration and Nationality Act is in effect and has virtually the same wording. The only difference is the addition of the namecheck, which is supposed to be a speedy security check with the "new" judicial integrated computer system, which apparently isn't up and running yet.
