A different way to look at Shanghai

Just a link, if there are any roller funs who happen to be in Shanghai, you should really try it out. It is for people of all levels. It is a entirely different way to look at the city. Also, every year in July, there is a high way roller marathon in Suzhou, quite a lot of fun to participate (42k and a 9k )

Rollerskating? In Shanghai? Holy Crap! Not in the streets I was on.

Went out last night with about 45 other people (10 or so French) for an 18 k roller along the Huangpu River. Supprised to learn that there are officially 8000 French in Shanghai (unofficial number may be much higher as the data comes from registration with the French Embassy). Just wonder how many Americans live and work in Shanghai.

Wow! Do the authorities make any kind of accommodations traffic-wise for the skaters or do they hassle you at all?

 

That's alot of people sharing the road with all that Shanghai traffic.

No real problems with cops on the road. We had a cop yell at some of our group members when they went into the main road, instead of the bike lane when the bike lane got too crowded.

 

There is street roller every Monday through Saturday at different locations in Shanghai and the coolest being the Wednsday night (every other week) street roller with the French legion, each time about 40-50 people. It made the newspaper. The speed rollers gather at the Science Musium every Thursday for Marathon training, (Highway Marathon every July 7 in Suzhou and thus far the French still rules the event) and roller with Nicole, a gruelling 50km at roughly 30 km/hr every Saturday morning.

 

If you travel to other cities, Beijing and Shenzhen also have well organized weekly events.

 

It is fairly safe as long as you stay in the bike lanes. The scary trips are those inter-city ones where we have to travel on speed ways without bike lanes, sharing the road with them crazy car and truck drivers. Did a 87km from Shanghai to Suzhou and don't think I would ever do it again.

That sound like alot of fun except for the 87km. I've never rollerbladed and it sounds like Shanghai wouldn't be a good place to learn.

What part of Shenzhen? I lived in LuoHu for a year and never heard of rollerblade events.

In Shenzhen, every Saturday night in front of Sai Ge Plaza, starting at 7 and Sunday street roller,normally starting at 3 pm from Dong Men (starting from across the street of True Colors to Nan Shan along Bin He Road, about 20 KM). I used to travel from HK to Shenzen on weekends to skate with those guys and girls.

Last night almost 80 people joined the 20km roller round Shanghai. Finally attracted the attention of police. Funny thing is, if it had been entirely Chinese, the cops may want to stop us. Thanks to the French, German and New Zealanders, the cops just escorted us for a while till we got rid of them by going up stairs to another street. The cops just told us to take care of the foreign friends (haha, the leader of the pack is French!). Well, it is fun

Yes the foreign guys are treated nicely in Shanghai, by government, and by locals as well.

We chose a French guy to talk to the cops. I think the cop gave up trying to understand his Chinese.
