The experience you've described above is the complete opposite of what I and my SO experienced with Mr. Yang back in March 2007. We stayed at a 2 bedroom apartment put up by Mr. Yang and his associates. Here's what we experienced everyday for 9 days at Mr. Yang's apartment:

- Clean apartment with great air conditioning on every room including the living room

- Daily visit by a cleaning lady

- Hot water showers

- DSL internet access for an additional 10RMB per day

- Loaner cell phone from Mr. Yang at a nominal fee

- Free review of all our forms and documentations

- Free personal all-day escort to the Hospital for SO's checkup

- When I called Mr. Yang about an issue with the washing machine, within 30 minutes Mr. Yang and a repair man showed up and fixed the thing!

- When I called Mr. Yang about a drainage issue in the shower, he showed up with a plunger within 15 minutes and unclogged it!

- At all times Mr. Yang, his wife and the lady associate were courteous, responsive and willing to help regardless of requests or the time of request

- Last but no least, I requested and obtained a "fa piao" from Mr. Yang when we checkout at the end of our happy, comfortable and enjoyable stay.

I think you and your SO were scammed by an Imposter claming to be Mr. Yang. Perhaps you could tell us what Mr. Yang looks like and which floor was his office located? That should clear things up!

Yep you pretty much sum up our experience this past February, absolutely no problem with Mr Yang for us either.

WE allow both Mr. Yang and Mr. Xie to have a pinned post offering their services to Candle members. This is the first time I've heard anything critical about either of them. They do not offer 5 star accomodations, but their price isn't in the 5 star range. What they both offer is a great deal of assistance and comfortable lodgings for a reasonable fee.

I'm hoping this is a case of mistaken identity. If not, I'll gladly remove the pinned post for that hotel.

Don, you're of course free to do as you wish. I would never question your judgement.

But, I for one, would hate to see CFL's relationship with either one of these gentlemen ended based solely on one bad experience.

Just my two cents.

Not met Mr. Yang yet, but have read many good reviews of his housing, support, and caring nature from the people ahead of us that have stayed there.

My girlfriend called Mr. Yang a few days ago and was impressed and comfortable with his answers...so July 18th...we're gonna BE THERE BUCKO !!!

And we'll call him when we get to Guangzhou so we don't have to deal with the hucksters outside. I'll take lots of monoply money to give the husksters so they can buy more phony badges and outfits, eh?

In the past I have read complaints here about them, but most of the stuff I read about them is good.

If you manage to get a room there booked, its very convienient to

stay so near the US Consulate, and if you wander around the back streets there, you can find plenty of small cheap good restaurants

and small shops,so you dont really need to spend a lot of money or hassel with taxi and bus while staying in the expensive GuangZhou City Center.

CFL Members stay in many different hotels,so I would like to encourage everybody to post the contact information of your

favorite places to stay in China.

We ARE allowed to post hotel names and telephone numbers here.

Sometimes the Chinese fiance must travel alone to their

interview in GuangZhou several times, and maybe is short on money,

so post information about the cheaper budget "Chinese only" hotels,

if you have ever stayed in them.

at least you guys passed your interview...

congratulations!

minimum 4 star well known hotels always, no excuses

The Westin Guangzhou is now open for business. They soft opened in May 2007. It's right next door to the Consulate building. It is rated 5 stars in China but probably more like 4 stars internationally.

I believe Rogerica recently visited on his latest trip. Perhaps he can share his experience there. :)

Zhen is currently staying in a shared room at Mr. Yangs. We have had some trouble with her cell phone not working in Guangzhou, I called his wife this morning and within a few minutes I received a call from Zhen and her roommate. Her roommate spoke excellent english and was able to brief me on the interview and picking up the visas, etc. I do not know the details of cleanliness of the rooms, but I was pleased that within a few minutes of my call this morning Mrs. Yang was able to have Zhen contact me. To me that was service that I am very pleased with.

Getting or not getting a receipt with a chop on it is pretty much meaningless.

The Chinese are crazy for these damn things. I don't have a registered company in China and found it impossible to sign contracts with DHL, China Post, 40-50 manufacturers and any number of other little things.

What's a guy to do when he can't sign contracts and do business without the rubber stamps?

I do what the Chinese do. I go to the authorized stamp shops that normally make these things. Instead of 10 RMB you give them 80. Walla-Walla Washington, you got yourself a stamp.

If 'whiteboy' can do it, imagine how easy it is for a native to get a stamp.

Getting a stamp on something in China means nothing. Nothing at all.

I have heard nothing but good reports come from people who have stayed there. This is the only bad review I have heard yet and I am cynical as to what really happened. I am inclined to believe that someone is intentionally trying to hurt their business. It would be nice if Mr or Mrs Yang would post their side of the story.

I am inclined to believe that someone is intentionally trying to hurt their business. It would be nice if Mr or Mrs Yang would post their side of the story.

Why?

I agree that one bad, bad experience in many is a good reason for skepticism and maybe, alarm. Or it can be taken at face value and more inquiry.

My questions would be:

1. Why would the poster make it up?

2. Why would the proprieter fall off the wagon suddenly and so completely?

I'm assuming the OP could be emailed and asked for more info. On first glance, it seems like it would make sense to investigate further. Lots of posters have given fairly decent descriptions to try to figure out if they were in the right place or not.

If the OP is lieing, why? It seems unlikely. It seems more likely that they were scammed into thinking they were in one location when they were really in another.

Some of these shills for hotels and services are VERY adept at inserting themselves into your life.

I think its entirely possible that a shill approached these people, played along with them with the aplomb of a Vegas mindreader and just whisked them away.

Its entirely possible that every person in the 'hotel' thought they were dealing with this Yang guy. Hell there are only a hundred or so family names in China. There are probably REALLY a hundred hotels in Guangzhou run by a Yang.

Why doesn't some moderator try to email the OP and get to the bottom of it?

There could even be yet another explanation. Maybe this Yang guy was on vacation or something and his fill-in help decided to make some extra money running the place on full-on cheap mode to pocket some cash. You know, the cat's away, the mice will play sort of thing.

Who knows? I would just say, reserve judgment on the hotel and the OP until all facts are in. Its the nature of the beast that we all want to jump onto the defense or attack of people without knowing the facts.

You know, the same behaviour we abhor in VO's who just can't see that the gorgeous Chinese honey you met 6 months ago, loves your gray haired, 50 year old fat butt, and how dare they be skeptical :D

That was funny as hell Jim !!

Being an adventurous kinda guy, on July 18th I'll be sittin' on my 50 somethin' year old butt in one of Mr. Yang's rooms, studying interview questions and procedures with my gorgeous Chinese honey. If I have any Chinese men or women wih official looking coats studded with official looking badges, bells, whistles, star spangled trophies and awards...or even the ocassional medal of valor trying to steer us to a dump, I'll happily report it here...likewise I'll also report all the good stuff on Mr. and Mrs. Yang's rooms.

While I am sorry for what happened to the couple above, I do have an opinion on what happened but instead of using words to express it I'll let my actions speak for me.

We are absolutely positively sure it was Mr Yang's!!!

We got the contact info here!

We called when we arrived.

There is zero chance it was someone esle's place.

Mr. Yang was conveniently busy and not there when we had trouble.

I am sure those of you who stayed more than a week received more attention than those of us who stayed one night.

Still, the facts are the facts:

1) He has no hotel license. His business is illegal. (He has not yet posted a copy of his license as I requested in my original post.)

2) Anything and everything that may happen to you is your and only your responsibility when you stay at an unlicensed hotel, unlike a real hotel.

3) Yes, you too can get into trouble with the police for staying at his hotel. (How many of you actually go to the police department to register when you stay there, for example? A real hotel does that for you. I've lived in China quite a while. I've known at least two people who ran into trouble with the police for staying at an illegal hotel, one of them fined quite heavily).

Anyone going to GZ can stay where they wish, but after our experience we felt it our duty to post what happened. Our experience may be in the minority of those posted here, but why would you want to take that kind of risk for such an important event?
