hakkamike
Types of Social Security Cards We issue three types of Social Security cards: 1. The card most people have shows your name and Social Security number and lets you work without restriction. We issue this card to: U.S. citizens, or people who are lawfully admitted to the U.S. for permanent residence, or who have permission from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to work permanently in the U.S. 2. The second type of card bears the legend, "NOT VALID FOR EMPLOYMENT." We issue this card to people who: are lawfully admitted to the U.S. but don't have DHS permission to work. You need this card if a federal or state law requires you to have a Social Security number to get a benefit or service; or are living in the U.S. and don't have DHS permission to work but, because they're entitled to a federally funded benefit, are required by federal law to have a Social Security number to receive the benefit. 3. The third type of card bears the legend, "VALID FOR WORK ONLY WITH DHS AUTHORIZATION." We issue this card to people who have DHS permission to work temporarily in the U.S. Cards issued prior to April 2004 bear the legend, "VALID FOR WORK ONLY WITH INS AUTHORIZATION." Link to comment

dnoblett
What is it with some SSA offices? They do seem to employ some of the most clueless people with regard to K-1 visas. A few links to print out: https://s044a90.ssa.gov/apps10/poms.nsf/lnx...33;opendocument (Point out under section C where K-1 are considered work authorized with or without EAD)http://www.kamya.com/ssn/em00154.pdf (Interoffice memo from SSA stateing that K-1s get SSN with or without EAD) One of the main reasons this is is that it can take more than 90 days to get a EAD, and some states give people a hard time issuing a marriage license when one of the parties does not have an SSN. NOTE: SSN is not a requirement for a marriage license. From what I see on the Marriage license application from MN:WARNING FOR THE COLLECTION OF SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBERS: If you have a social security number you are required by federal & state law to put it on the marriage license application Title 42, United States CodeSection 666(a)(13)(A), Minnesota Statutes, Section 1444.223, & Minnesota Statutes, Section 517.08 Sub. 1a (1997)]. Your Social Security number is reported to the Minnesota Department of Health & is considered private underMinnesota Statute, Section 15.165. The marriage application will not be processed with out social security numbers. If necessary your Social Security number may be used to help obtain financial support of your child. http://www.co.clay.mn.us/Depts/Recorder/Fo...Fs/AppMarLc.pdf NOTE: The "IF" at the beginning of the SSN disclaimer. IllinoisDave
Since I'll be dealing with this in the near future (hopefully), I have a question. What is it that gives our SO the "permission" to work? Is it one of the forms we fill out later? Do we specifically need to ask for this permission from DHS? Link to comment

I suspect the NOA1 for AOS will be the EAD and AP document. Also a few POEs will stamp a K-1 visa and I-94 card with a temp EAD stamp showing work authorized for the 90 days of the I-94, after that will need regular EAD. Only airport POE that regularly does this is JFK. It no longer has to be stamped "Work Authorized". If you have it you can work. Link to comment
Randy W
If you simply have an employer, you can work. The employer will be looking for the EAD and SS cards as soon as you can get them. Some may not wish to hire you before that time. Link to comment
