SirLancelot
Hey I'm all for it Tony but I don't see it coming to bear. First of all there isn't a shortage of marriageable men in the US yet and secondly American women like women all over the world want to marry a man who is financially secure. Since Chinese incomes are lower than in the US they aren't likely to want to move to China. If the man comes here she would have to be financially responsible for him. Not something most women of any country want to do. Carl, As China becomes a world business leader in future, more Chinese men will have money and status, then things may change. Well, anything is possible. Anything is possible, but there's already quite a few rich HK men and Taiwanese men and Shanghai men, there's not a lot of American women chasing after those rich men. I think it has to do with the US media and its portrayal of Asian men. Until Hollywood portrays Asian men as something more than geeky computer nerds or engineers, you won't see a lot of American women chasing after Chinese men. But the Chinese government has lots of options open to them if they really considered this a problem. They can offer tax incentives for the birth of girls--then there would be more parents wanting girls. The government can also tax single women or men leaving the country for the purposes of marriage. They can forbid the departure of their nationals abroad for marriage purposes. They can forbid any foreigners from marrying Chinese nationals in China. There are many steps they can take, but the government hasn't taken any steps really. They have in fact gone the opposite direction of making it easier for foreigners to marry a Chinese national in China. Someone made a comment about war with these extra males. That is an interesting and shocking thought, but it certainly is one logical endpoint that may transpire. The article's title is a little mis-leading. It's not all Chinese men, but poor Chinese men who will have lots of problems finding a wife in the future. The growing number of upper middle class men in big cities are too easily finding mistresses who would love to be their second wife. So these more well off men certainly don't think there is a problem. I personally think it is a problem for the Chinese government and I expect to see them tighten up control of the exportation of single, never married, Chinese women if they see a trend of those type of Chinese women leaving the country. On the other hand, for the older, divorced women with children who find it very difficult to marry again in China, I think the Chinese government is quite happy to see them leave as it's one less person they have to worry about. As with Mexicans and South Americans, there is inevitably a lot of foreign remittance back into the home country, so that is another plus for the Chinese government when they send off an older, divorced lady with child. There's really no cons but all pros when that demographics is exported out for re-marriage. Just my 2 cents. You are free to have differing opinions. Link to comment
warpedbored
If the Chinese govt banned single never married women from leaving the country for marriage it would be purely feel good legislation. The numbers simply aren't large enough to be a statistic. Since their goal is lower population, disproportion between the sexes would only accelerate that goal. The downside would be a large number of horny men with no wives. Crime would likely go up. What I would really like to see is our Chinese women member's feelings on the topic. Ladies, what do you think? Edited February 27, 2007 by warpedbored (see edit history) Link to comment

Indeed, this may have been centrally planned from the very beginning. Population reduction is indeed China's number 1 goal. But this is also very dangerous. Sociologically speaking, this kind of inverted ratio is one of the worst things for a peaceful society, as single men with no wives or children to tie them down to society can be extremely destructive to said peaceful society. Indeed they may have a lot more crime going into the future. Edited February 27, 2007 by SirLancelot (see edit history) Link to comment
lostinblue
http://www.futurepundit.com/archives/002075.htmlIn a new book, Bare Branches: Security Implications of Asia's Surplus Male Population (MIT Press), Valerie M. Hudson and Andrea M. den Boer warn that the spread of sex selection is giving rise to a generation of restless young men who will not find mates. History, biology, and sociology all suggest that these "surplus males" will generate high levels of crime and social disorder, the authors say. Even worse, they continue, is the possibility that the governments of India and China will build up huge armies in order to provide a safety valve for the young men's aggressive energies. "In 2020 it may seem to China that it would be worth it to have a very bloody battle in which a lot of their young men could die in some glorious cause," says Ms. Hudson, a professor of political science at Brigham Young University.
