When will we receive Social Security Card?

Recommended Posts

Hell Friends,

My husband has entered into USA with IR1 visa a month ago. We were told that Social Security Card will be sent shortly after his arrival. It has been a month.... Does anyone know approximately when we will receive? We live in California. We even went to SS office in my city, but they would not tell us (or would not know) because it is USCIS applied the number. He needs SSN in order to take driver license test.

Appreciate your help and answer!!

Go back to the SS office and fill out an application (you can also get the form online). They do not automatically apply for you, in spite of what they say.

They can fill out a SS-5 application and take it back to the same SS office, or even a different office for a change, but if "USCIS" shows up anywhere on their computers, they will be told to wait. This is exactly what the OP said, about the CIS ties to the SS number, and that situation has always been the case. They will have to wait. It will come in the mail sooner or later.

All they can do is stay on the SS people and keep asking them what follow-up they can do in getting status on the card from the CIS. Likewise, they can call and ask the CIS the same thing about the SSA.

Approach it from both ways and compare notes. Once they get it figured out, the card will arrive to them in the mail....:)

-good luck and I hope you get your card real soon!

I was drawing off memory of similiar situations posted before.

Mainly, the SS number box on the I-130 is for companies filing multiple I-130's for foreign workers but family based petitoners have done the same thing and eventually receive the card but SS administrators at the SS office's won't do a thing if it is recorded on their computers as being in conjunction with the USCIS. The SSA won't make a move until they hear from the CIS.

It is best to leave that block on the I-130 unchecked in family-based petitions and apply for a SS card once in the states. Again, if USCIS shows up on the SSA's computers, the applicant will just have to wait but they can pester both the SSA and the CIS until they get the card.

SSN could be very tricky.

they told us that SO had a B1 visa and that B1 could nto apply for SS.

because the idiot thought a cursive k looked like a B :P

it was about 5 months for us to get hers.....

solution, go to a different field office.

Jim J ran into a mess with this as well and i believe they are in CA.

maybe he might see this thread.

We went to SS Office again this morning. Fortunately a lady accepted our application form. We told her that my husband has been in US for 1 months and has not got his card yet. Here is what we got from her...

Normally USCIS will apply SS card for immigrant. But not always. To avoid multiple numbers applied to one person, SSA will tell immigrant wait for 1 month or so. If he still not get it from mail, then SSA will accept the application. She entered our info in a computer and gave us a receipt, which saying 2 weeks from now, the SS card will be emailed to our address.

So, we are crossing fingers now, and see we really got it in 2 weeks.
