China (Country threat level - 3): On 14 March 2003, Singapore and Taiwan reportedly warned their citizens to temporarily defer non-essential travel to Hong Kong and Guangdong Province in China and Hanoi in Vietnam due to concerns over an outbreak of atypical pneumonia. The unidentified virus causes flu-like symptoms, and more than 40 staff members at four hospitals in Hong Kong are being treated for such symptoms, although it is unclear if they are infected with the virus. A 48 year-old U.S. businessman recently succumbed to the illness after being transferred in serious condition from a hospital in Hanoi to one in Hong Kong for treatment. The man had originally traveled from Hong Kong to Hanoi, where he reportedly arrived already in serious condition, and there are concerns that he may have infected other travelers along the way. Regardless, so far, the virus has mainly infected hospital staff in all locations, as they are in direct and prolonged contact with infected patients. It appears to be fatal only if treatment is not sought after the onset of symptoms.

I feel very sure that this is the same thing that I had three months ago. The symptoms are certainly very much the same including the very rapid onset.

The official Chinese explanation is a little strange as it would indicate that an old disease has taken on an entirely different avenue of infection. According to the government, "Chinese health authorities said the outbreak was caused by an unusual strain of chlamydia not transmitted through sexual contact."

What a mess! :) :D :D

As most of you know, I live in Guangdong and panic has set in again around here. Price hikes for white vinegar and antibiotics. Here we go again. The university has bought up a bunch of traditional Chinese medicine for folks to take as a preventative. Students are in a bit of an uproar of this as well. Had several show up to class wearing masks. :(
