First name check. Second name check.

Anyone know what it is they check, and how they check it. I've read about petitions getting stuck in"name check hell". I can understand petitions getting stuck (seems the whole process is overflowing with mud), but what goes on when it gets super stuck because of a name check?

Great question, and I think one of the most frequently asked. There seems to be a lot of mystery and secrecy regarding name checks, and how and where they are completed. But I believe it is basically it is a background check through several govt agencies, such as FBI, CIA, etc and so on.

 

I believe the first is done at the USCIS on the petitioner (you) when you submit the initial app, and the subsequent checks are done on the visa applicant (your SO) around the P3 and P4 times.

 

I believe name checks are legally supposed to be completed in 6 months or less, however some are completed in as little as 2 or 3 weeks. They check all the names with a particular birthdate. If she has a common name, then more hits will come up on the check, thus prolonging the process. If she has an uncommon name, then it can be completed so much more quickly.

 

Others will probably post more info than I have, but while you wait you can do some searches on CFL (at the bottom right of the page), check the GUZ Speaks forum here (for information on security checks directly from the US Consulate in Guangzhou), and also check the FAQ's section of the site (in the CFL links at the upper right side of the page).

 

You will get more information, however, I sometimes wonder if the info raises more questions than it answers.
