I found this on the USCONGUZ web site, in the job openings area:

2 Visa Assistants (Temporary)

(Immigrant Visa Section) 11/04/2005

N31-1415-061

N31-1415-062

OPEN TO: All Interested Candidates

POSITION: Visa Assistant (FSN-7/FP-7)

Full Performance Level

OPENING DATE: Friday, November 4, 2005

CLOSING DATE: Friday, November 18, 2005

WORK HOURS: Full-time; 40 hours/week

Employment Period: Temporary employment for five months

I figure they have these positions filled by now, and maybe they are training now. So they seem to be trying to address the volume at least for five months. This is only a stop gap measure, but it's something, right?

I read on another post that the consulate was supposedly closing for a couple weeks for the holiday. I dont know if that is just certain people or sections, but the official holidays are:

December 26 Monday Christmas Day US

January 2 Monday New Year's Day US & China

January 16 Monday Martin Luther King, Jr's Birthday US

January 30, 31, February 1 Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday Lunar New Year
