Drivers test for non-English speakers

Recommended Posts

I know this was talked about in another topic...but I thought I would bring it up again. My SO will (hopefully) be coming over to the States soon. Her English could certainly use some work and I am worried that it will take her a long time to be able to pass the drivers test. I know these vary state-to-state, but I just cant imagine here in NH they have a Chinese version. Anybody care to enlighten me?

I've waited up all night for a worth while post..

I hate to ask the obvious, did you call RMV?

I knew a chinese lady who went to Connecticut... she tried to do the test in Chinese and failed... So second time around did it in English and passed !

Turns out , for her, although her english was so-so, it was easier to follow the book-to-test in english.

I did call and the woman I spoke to only had knowledge of things which occured within a 3-inch radius of her.....she said my SO could take the test in Spanish! I cant imagine they offer a test in Chinese and also cant imagine they would allow me to translate/interpret for her (I would definitely cheat)

After searching the Internet the only state that I found with a Chinese manual was Washington. Because the rules are fairly constant using this manual may help no matter what state you live in. It may not be a bad idea to down load it in English too. This way you can tell her what rules are different.

Interestingly, in Georgia (at least in Atlanta), you can take the written test in Chinese. The sign test is in English, and the actual road test is in Southern as is "hook a right, son".

Last week a friend of my near Houston had his wife take the written test. She did it oraly with a translater. The man who translated is a driving instructor who caters to Chinese. You may find your state receptive to this also. Even in Nashville we have a large chinese baptist church. I've called them (NO I didn't join) and got some great information on various things. Maybe if you can find a Chinese organization they will point you in the right direction.
