  1. I am filing a 2008 joint return with my wife electing to be considered resident for whole year. She has some 2008 income in China. How does one report this income since she has no W-2 in China? Will IRS ask for proof?

Anyone has experience with this? Thanks.

First and foremost, Do not use the H&R block software to do your taxes if you are filling out Form 2555. After I was through I found 3 gross errors which would have cost me over 600$. I am not sure how good the other tax software is.

You will have to use Form 1040

    1. You will claim her income on Line 7. My wife only worked the first 6 months of 2008. I just used her monthly income and converted it to dollars using the average monthly conversion rate. I put this on a spreadsheet and have a copy for my records. Since there is no record of her salary I am treating it the same way I would treat tips. Unless her income is over ~85,000$, the amount is a moot point (as long as you are close). You will be deducting the same amount from the total income

    2. fill out Form 2555EZ ¨C You can use form 2555, but it is a lot of unnecessary work if she made less than ~85,000$

    3. You will record the amount on line 21 as a negative number (unless she made over ~85,000$) and subtract it from the total income.

    4. You will also have to make a statement to the IRS that your wife will be considered a resident alien when it comes to taxes for 2008. That is explained in Pub. 54.

  2. Wow, that's fast. It only takes one day? Can visa be sent to other places?

    Visa is in the mail!!!!!!!!!

    I am not sure

My bride received her visa this morning!!!

She will give a 30 day notice at work tomorrow. then go see her mother in Boaquanling for couple of weeks. She Has not seen her mother, but 1 time in 17 years. Date of arrival July 29.

  3. Update:

Mr. Yang was very nice and encouraging.

    The VO was nice.

and the visa will be sent to the Post office in her small village, Jiangmen.

    Oh EK01,

I didn't know you had a choice about post offices.

Is it sent EMS, and will it arrive reasonably quickly ?

    Congratulations!

I didn't know that either. I was thinking that she would have to make another trip to guangzhou. Yes sent by EMS. Even checked on it today, but nothing. What is taking so long? :D

  4. More update

My future bride went to have the medical about 2 weeks ago. While she was there she decided to pick up the package on the 9th, the day before the interview. No worries, until I find out that there is a holiday on the 9th. I told her on Thursday the 5th that I thought there was a holiday on the 9th. She told me, no everything is fine. Well Friday the 5th she called the doctor to make sure. UHOH! Holiday on Monday the 9th. I am not sure if she talked the doctor into having someone there or if it was scheduled to have someone there but the doctor told her that someone would be there so that she could pick up the package in the morning. She was planning to pick it up in the afternoon.

My bride arrived at the consulate at 7 am. When the fellow with the bullhorn got there, he formed 2 lines, one for immigrant visas and another for Non-immigrant visas. She got in the wrong line. We had talked about this, Technically, this is an immigrant visa, but on the face it is a non-immigrant visa. To sum it up I am glad I was not the guy with the bullhorn.

When she was called she gave the medical package to who I guess was the prescreener. He opened the package and found that there was only one copy of the I-156 and the I-157. He gave her blanks to fill out but she reached inside the kitchen sink and handed him the extra forms.

  5. Here is how the interview went. They called her to the window at 10:40. The VO was a male.

    1. Do you speak English? Very little (the interview was done in Chinese)

    2. Who Helped you with the Application? My Fiance

    3. How did you meet? On the internet.

    4. Where did you meet? At Cherry Blossoms

    5. When was your first communication? March 26, 2007(My birthday)

    6. How many times did your fianc¨¦ come to China. 3 times.

    7. When did he come to China? May, September, December

    8. The VO asked for pictures

    9. What is your fiance¡¯s occupation? Inspector

Will update later. We are having trouble with the internet connection.

  6. And just to complete the variations, my letter of employment was addressed specifically to the GZ Visa Section on the theory that it couldn't hurt to address them specifically.

And sure enough, the VO told Lao Po that this caused him to award 3.25 points for the letter rather than the usual 3.0 This was extremely important as he had deducted a quarter point from our photos together because, in his misguided judgment, he estimated that I was more than ten pounds over weight. Turns out the offset bonus for the address was sufficient to push our score to 85 and thereby qualify for a pink slip.

Ok ... maybe I'm kidding about the numbers ...

I went ahead and found out the all The VO's Names and had a letter addressed to each one drawn up. I had to go all out since I am 20 pounds overweight. I am looking for 4.25+

  7. Hey, I got the great news ON my BIRTHDAY. GUZ seems to like giving out birthday gifts. Didn't Mark's little daughter got hers as well?~ ;-)

Roger - is your birthday or your honey's coming up soon? =P

Well, Today is day 90 for me. Not opened yet. I guess I will be ok If it's on my birthday, March 26.

  8. OK! Sorry for the misinformation. I did some further investigation after I posted the info on VJ. The paperwork was probably delivered to the warehouse. The DHL # 8183638960. I believe the warehouse is quite possibly in Hong Kong. 2 hour delivery time to final destination

Weird - the DHL website claimes it was 'delivered' in HKG on 12/27.

Yes, Found out that most all packages delivered in that area of China(Guangzhou, Shenzhen, etc.) are routed through Hong Kong. and then shipped overland. This includes almost all the major delivery companies.

When the search is done for the packages through the DHL website, you will notice that the only area that these are delivered to are Hong Kong

The DHL warehouse is what, what they call "stuck at the custom"?

Can you please teach me how to track through DHL? Altho my papers were sent out on 11/16, probably info too old to track... =\
