  1. Best of the best? Dude, I've had a couple hundred CAs and CEs and 99% of those were via a slick with a chopper jockey on the stick. Not always in cold LZs. In Hue a slick jockey saved 7 of us after his bird was shot to hell and turbo smoking. Long story but he was awarded the MH for it. Anyone who goes into harms way for his brothers was the best of the best!

  2. She has been getting the retirement money for 5 years, Being a US citizen doesn't matter but now they want proof she is alive. The embassy is 700 miles from here and I'm too old to walk that far. I'm sure there is some kind of notarized form but don't now where to get it or where to send it-adding to the ever growing list of things wifey says I don't know!!

  3. Would someone much smarter than me explain how to prove my wife is alive?

she has been a US citizen for 5 years. She has been getting her Chinese retirement money sent to a bank in China. Now the Chinese Gov wants proof she is alive. She's a bit slow sometimes but I'm pretty sure she's alive.

Are there forms or procedures other than going 700 miles to the Chinese embassy?

  4. We are proud to announce a new website, Chinafamilyvisa.com, that is dedicated to the dissemination and discussion of information pertaining to the ¡®China Connection¡®. Much like other sites with similar missions, it will be a place to learn, a place to pass time while waiting and a place to meet and bond with those of similar interests. Chinafamilyvisa.com is in no way meant as a replacement for CFL or any other site with a similar mission. We are not attempting to compete with, take away from, or diminish CFL in any way. We feel the missions of Candleforlove and of Chinafamilyvisa are extremely important. Competition would only serve to diminish this mission and is NOT our purpose. We are simply offering an alternative to other sites. A site that in many ways is the same but brings a different philosophy with it. Different does not mean better-it simply means different. We will always have respect for CFL and for what it has given us. We are open to all comers and welcome questions, comments, and lively debate. Why start a new site? Good question! The answer is simple, no single site can be all things to all people. Varying sites with differing views and yet maintaining parallel missions should help to serve even more of those who are in any stage of running the gauntlet we call immigration. We look forward to seeing you there.

  5. Did you call around to the Junior Colleges in a 150 mile radius ?

There's only one community college within 150 miles (although it has satellite schools). You are correct, I should probably do that.

First let me clarify. My stepdaughters scholarships were not based on my income-they were academic. She can also get $11,000.00 per year from the VA for four years but we elected not to take that as she plans on grad school so we're saving it. She is now in community college-a great choice as her scholarships cover all of it plus she gets an extra $3,000. per year for gas 'n such. Community college is VERY affordable and all of her first two years will transfer to a major college. Her degree will be from the major college (she is going to the same community college I went to before transferring to WKU and eventually to grad school).

Scholarships are very different than fed aid. Fed aid is mostly income based. Unless you make less than 50K yearly, you likley won't be eligible for anything UNLESS she can get listed as an independent student-then they base it on her income. Not so easy to do though.

At any rate, assuming she is a senior in HS this year, talk to her guidance counselor. It is their job to find her a scholarship. You will be amazed how many are available-even for C students.

    good luck

  6. My 18 year old step-daughter wants to go to university, so we've been working on it. January 1st we can start working on the FAFSA (free application for federal student aid)...HOWEVER...

I do not think she qualifies per the definitions that I found:

"You must be one of the following to receive federal student aid:

    • U.S. citizen

    • U.S. national (includes natives of American Samoa or Swain¡¯s Island)

    • U.S. permanent resident who has an I-151, I-551, or I-551C (Permanent Resident Card)"

Universities do not want her to apply as an International student, but rather as a domestic student. Filing as a domestic student we do not qualify for fill out some of the forms required for admission to the universities (FAFSA) is required by 4 of the 5 universities she's interested in.

Is this a catch-22 or a state of limbo?

    Anyone know about this situation?

If all goes well she may get her temporary green card this spring or early summer.

I am also not keen on her eligibility for financial aid being based on my financial records.

As long as she has a green card their is no problem. My stepdaughter is in college on a full ride. YES!! you can fill out the FAFSA forms and YES she will be eligible as long as she is a legal resident, NOT an international student!!! Of course your income is taken into account but at the minimum, you and she will be able to get loans etc..

  7. I've got the Garmin nuvi 850. It speaks Chinese and works great. It is pricey because you can also talk to it but it is so easy to use (touch screen etc) that there is no need to speak to it. The Garmin Nuvi 750 is exactly the same except you can't speak to it-Lee has the 750 and loves it. You can get the 750 on Ebay, new in the box-not a refurb- for around $200.00. Sam's club has them for $300.00 but why do that -hit Ebay.

It's got the big screen and is SIMPLE to operate.

  8. Well, after flawlessly filling out of the endless numbers of forms since I met my wife in China in 2004 to get her through the 10 year green card, I finally screwed up.

I studied the N-400 the past week along with the instructions, filled it out, and mailed it in today with my $675. Then I came to CFL to look around and discovered I had failed to read ALL of the "Guide to Naturalization", especially page 48, "Document Checklist". I thought it was too easy just sending in the form with nothing else, but I was in a hurry. So now my wife's N-400 is on its way to the USCIS without any of the endless volumes of required documents.

No doubt they will fail it and return it to me who knows when. But it would have been nice if they had included all the required documents in the N-400ins, which they do with the instructions that come with all other forms. Just when I thought I was seeing the light at the end of this long nightmarish immigration tunnel, it turns out to be another oncoming train. When will it end?

I did the same thing. They processed it, sent us a biometrics appointment and now we are waiting for the RFE. No big deal!

  9. I'm not sure if this is the right name, but I know it's close. As I recall she was the consular affairs officer or had a similar position at the Department of State. She helped us to get the interview faster once the name check hell was over. Now I have a close friend who needs help, she's pregnant and due on the first week of January. Her husband is from Costa Rica and went for interview on November 4th at the consulate there, was approved but afterwards received a call from the consulate saying that a name check must be done before he could get his visa. I would like to suggest her to write to this woman but I've lost her e-mail address. Does anyone have it?

Her name is Maura Hardy (sp). I have her address someplace-I'll look for it.

  10. I thought your wife and her daughter read chinese

Funny guy. Like me, you know how hard it can be to communicate to a non-technical person in English about internet connections, computers, and so on. There is nothing worse than trying to explain to my wife, or ask my wife to take a moment and help me navigate menus.

    "Honey, what does that say?"

    "What does what say?"

"That little button right there, what does it mean in English?"

"How can I know? I think it means go around?"

    "Go around? Are you sure?"

    "I think so."

"Do you see a button that says Menu?"

    "How can I know?"

"I mean, don't you see a button that means like Main, or Menu, or List or something like that?"

"I don't know these things. Why do you ask me?"

In short, she's a very sweet lady and I love her with all my heart. She just gets intimidated with tech-stuff.

Well, we don't even know what type of connections you have yet!

That is what we need to know.

Regarding the connection, I thought I explained that in my first post, but let me try again.

Connection type: DSL. The incoming connection to the house is on the same line as our landline telephone. You plug directly into a telephone jack with a telephone cable that plugs directly into a telephone jack on the router supplied by the internet / telephone company.

Router: The router is wireless, with four hardwire ports available on the back. It functions like a dial up connection, PPPoE configuration to the PC. The box is password protected with a username provided by the internet company, with the password being our telephone number.

Try network magic. It's free and you can download it online. It will tell you who and what is on your network. The paid version allows you to regulate your network.

  11. These (house ownership/rental-lease documents, utility bills, car titles, insurance documents, bank accounts, etc) are basic 'VALID RELATIONSHIP' requirements and have been discussed Ad nauseam.

They are also incredibly easy to do. Quit claim or title change or whatever. Unless of course you don't trust her, and or, don't want her to own anything. After all, that's the basis of a valid relationship. Isn't it?

"My" (don't you mean our?) utility bills are also all done on line. So, they still send a paper copy, maybe not only because I asked for them. The water bill will only allow one name. So, I put the mailing address in her name. For another bill I can only put her on the address label as to me, in care of (C/O) her. My cars' titles were changed in one day with the change in my hand when I left the office. Bank accounts, hell, whatever, they are all easy to change.

Trouble is, you have to want (and then take the effort) TO DO IT!

Thing is I did all the other stuff...I sent them reams of financial papers with both names and addresses...insurance, car titles, beneficiaries, credit cards, federal and state taxes, both of our pay stubs with names and addresses...Enough to satisfy any MORON on the planet that we were living together as husband and wife...These people are just used to playing god and justifying their miserable existence...I'm sure they have a quota of rejects...

Did you remember the two affidavits?? I know of three others who got an RFE--all for lack of affidavits!!

  12. My wife just told me about it-I guess you called. Damned happy for you Jany. you deserve a break and Wa La--you got one. So now there is but one thing left to say----

    WAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!

:) :D ;) :redblob: :whip: :redblob: :vava: :redblob: :baby: :redblob:  :redblob:

  13. BTW, according to one visa service website, China no longer requires plane and hotel reservations to obtain a visa.

    http://chinavisaservice.org/

New Visa Regulations: Starting September 26,2008 - It is no longer required to provide flight details and hotel confirmations.

The China Embassy website has not confirmed this, but I hope it is true.

It is probably true. Most folks figured that they were only tightening the screws for the Olympics and that they would go back to the old ways this fall--looks like they are correct.

  14. i am buddhist/taoist. why do you christians think your thing is the way and we need to accept it to be enlightened ?

maybe you need to become buddhist ?

i just say this as your posts imply you feel you are doing us good to make us christian. i think better you accept buddhism. same approach ?

better just accept people whatever god, no one is better. right ?

You tell 'em Jin!! I agree 100%. If you go back to page one of this thread and read Mick's second post you will see that not all Christians think you should convert. He is a devout Christian that IS accepting of others views. A rare thing now a days.

  15. As long as you marry within 90 days of her entering the country all will be well.

thanks for your input. I have another question regarding form I-693a for our AOS packet. When my fiancee had her exam in guangzhou (august 1, 2008) she was never given this form. What she did receive was a vaccination book that was signed off by the attending physician. I have read others speak about this form was put into the sealed envelope that we gave to the customs agents in los angeles (which of course we do not have now). I am confused. What do i send as this supplemental form when we forward our AOS forms?

The I-693-vac sup is something you have to get from a civil surgeon. USCIS has a list of them on their website. you need to take the vac book you have. The Dr will have the form. He will give you the I-993a form in a sealed envelope and give you an unsealed copy.

  16. hi,

I've talked to a few people regarding how much is a good amount to give the girl's parents as gratitude for raising her all these years, and everyone gives a different answer.

Oringally, i thought 20,000RMB would be a good amount, but since I'll be taking their daughter from Shanghai, is 40-50,000RMB too little? It's a touchy subject and I thought I'd seek advice from the wise folks on this board. If I give too little, I dont want to feel like I'm disrespecting them, and if I give too much, I'll be hurting to pay the bills.

Thanks in advance for your help,

    Don

20k rmb is a good amount-more than most give-50k rmb is great IF you can afford it but not neccesary.

Whatever you give, put it in a red envelope and make it 999 or 9999 or 99999 or 999999999999999. I found that how much wasn't important as long as you honored their custom and gave something ending in 9's. I've gotten my money back 10 fold from her family. They INSIST on paying for everything when I'm in China and send me and wifey VERY expensive gifts--hmmmm me thinks they don't want her back???

  17. I've called and talked to real humans 15 times in the last few months. Ya just call the number and punch buttons-the 'change of address is one way but not the best one. Next time I call I¡¯ll write down the sequence.

Problem is that one level one ALL they can do is look up your case on the 'puter (same info you can get). As for answering Q's--good luck. I have yet to get the correct answer from them.

Level two(talk to a real IO) is much better but almost impossible to get to. I've been there three time but it takes lot of persistence to get the level ones to transfer you--ya gotta be aggressive!!
