  1. The VO asked Yue which language and she indicated English. After about two questions he decided it wasn't going to work an called in a translator to finish in Chinese. I think she was so nervous that she probably struggled even in Chinese. Well, she passed anyway.

You can't let this stuff get to you Scott. Just deal with the crap if it comes. I'm sure Yue could sense my worry and that could not have been much help to her.

  2. I will most certainly NOT tell her who has slept in my bed (Before we met - of course)!  Don't ask - don't tell....

If she is anything like my wife you forget the don't ask half of that equation. It took me two months to "put to bed" any notion that any other woman had even laid eyes on the bed. Hell, I had a used washer that I had to explain

  3. On all of my visits to China I had to report on how much I paid for

airfare, hotel etc. to my SO and her sisters. I was either given

a thumbs up or told I paid too much.

My expenses were reported to father-mother-sisters as well. I think this was mostly as evidence of my good intentions and proof of ability to care for Yue when she came to America. If Father doesn't approve, all bets are off

I did send her a little money from time to time even though we weren't married and she still worked. She never asked for money, but she was alway glad to get it. I was happy to send it.

  4. what do you mean shake down?

It might not be advisable to share a room with a woman in China that you are not married to, even in her own home. You may find your self contributing to the local precinct beer fund... or worse. Think about a police record. I know most have never had a problem, but it was a risk I would not (did not) take. We had separate rooms in GZ when Yue interviewed. Some hotelers might not even give you a room without proof of marraige, or an equivalent guarantee ;)

We recently went to Atlanta for a couple of days. After we checked into the hotel Yue quietly asked, "we don't need to show marry?" I'm thinking of a 1930's movie with Clark Gable

  5. I have a lot of sample tests in Chinese (with answers). PM me if you want them. Yue studied the WA manual, but mostly the tests (for the learner's permit). She passed the test the second time. I told her she would have to pay for the third test :bleh:

They have only two different tests for Chinese in Alabama, so you can olny try twice in one day. Problem is it takes all day to get to take it once

  6. FWIW, I just looked up our 129-F status online. We filed in Feb of 04. As expected there has been absolutely no progress in our case. They will inform us as soon as a decision is made.

This would be unberable if it wern't for the fact that that Yue actually arrived here 9 months ago. I've decided the online thingy is specifically designed to frustrate us. Trust in the mail man. Oh... never mind. <_<

  7. Thank you for all those who have responded my original post.  I just got an email confirmation from the SVP - HR benefits of my employer that I just have to leave SSN field blank as BC/BS does not require SSN for medical coverage.  I am going to enroll both my wife and my son for 2006 coverage though I am not sure when they will arrive in the U.S.  Thank you guys again.

Since you are already married, they may be eligible for benefits now. BC/BS (at least my plan) covers you while overseas. Finding a provider and submitting a claim might be a chalenge though :o

  8. As I understood it, the AP letter is only good for one entry, and it must be used by the "Presentation of the original of this document prior to..." date. Once it is stamped (at entry) you will probablly need a new one.

We applied for the "multiple" parole option and they sent us two letters :D

  9. I'll have to check into that. Would I get a better price for the tickets to NNG from GUZ if I buy them through the China Southern office there at LAX or Should I do it in GUZ? (The only Problem there is that I am totally lost there at the GUZ airport as I cant read a thing there & very few folks there can speak english.

I purchase e-tickets through their web site http://www.cs-air.com/en/ I'm sure there is a cheaper way, but it is easy. The web site is a little tempermental though. I could previously only get it to work with Explorer. Just checked, they have several flights to Nanning for 730 RMB (one way).

  10. I'm guessing you have the midnight flight to GZ, Delta code share flight with China Southern CZ32x? Delta and CS share the same terminal so you shouldn't have to go through security. 50 min doesn't count for much weather though and the next flight is 24 hours away.

Note about that terminal. It ain't Atlanta. It's only 10 or so gates and they roll the sidewalks up at 9 or 10 pm. Make sure you are covered with food and refreshments fo the wait.

  11. The first and now the third time ive come to China I have gotten sick. Let me say this how is medicine supposed to help yget better if upon putting it in your mout h it must be spit out. I have never tatsed anything so vile in my life as the stuff these people injest as medicine...and it hasnt helped. I asked my wife "If China is the oldest civilization in the world why havent the invented a medicine that tastes good?" She just laughed......I did to but I am longing for some flavored American stufyy. Also because I have had a stomach flew this trip now for 5 days we wnt to the doctors.......they need Sesmes Streets word of the day "SANITARY".......needless to say I wasnt gonna be stuck with a needle in this place it was bad enough I saw them use the same equipment on diffrent patients without being staralized before each use. DO NOT GET SICK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I take a bunch of Pepto with me and start with a small dose on the airplane and take a propylactic dose as long as I'm there. Never had to use a squatter in two trips. Better luck than Mexico. I have Always experienced "discomfort" there

  12. Many churches have ESL here. Different days, both day and night. They are free and some will even provide transportation.

In China I bought Yue "Family Albumn USA" VCD series for about 180 RMB for each of two sets of 20 or so VCDs. There are books that go with them, but I forget what they cost. She picked some more books, CDs and such along the way. I also sent her the Pimselur CDs for Cantonese speakers. These are highly regarded, but I couldn't get her to take much interest in these. Damn shame since they cost me almost $200 delivered.

Tutors in China. Be carefull. There are some manipulators out there. Ther more she can learn on her own, the better.

  13. Yes the characters are goofy looking symbols.  But this is when the program is started.  There is no 'view' to do, like if I were in IE.  Do you have a fast enough connection that you can email me the .exe file?

In XP go to control panel - regional and language settings, and set the encoding for non-unicode characters to Chinese. This may screw up the install (dialogs) on some english language programs, but it is easy to switch back and forth.

  14. Bottom line is that NONE of us married for altruistic reasons. We ALL married to better our life--period!! If my wife had made my life worse--I'd be history and I'm sure if her life was worse with me that without me, she'd be gone. We all have a motive!
