  1. Grey Loud probably drank too much and embarrassed his hosts I see he is claiming that he turned down an interview request from the WSJ. He is too annoying to watch.
  2. I think everybody who talks about China on youtube is demonetized, no matter which side of the aisle you are on. Advertisers dont want controversy and they dont want to be seen picking sides.
  3. Have you seen this guy Lele Farley? A Caucasian American, bilingual Mandarin/English rapper and comedian. What a bizarre niche. The new generation of China vloggers. Compare him to Grey Loud Unfortunately he has run afoul of the Chinese National Security State and had his internet presence erased.
  4. My wife and I always thought that we'd retire or semi-retire in China down the road. Actually our dream was to eventually move to HK - what was our favorite place in the world. Neither of those are obviously going to happen... My wife has lived abroad for most of her live after college, and told me if it weren't for her parents, she probably would never have gone back after college. Her sister and many of her relatives also live abroad. The two Michaels are screwed. And to think the poor guys are probably rotting away incommunicado in some shitty Chinese prison, having to deal with China's bullshit justice system. All while Meng continues to live in one of her Vancouver mansions, sends her kids to Canadian schools, uses Canadian health care, and is able to communicate with the outside world. And morons like Gweilo are going around praising the Chinese government while slamming Canada... what an effing joke. Unfortunately, Canada, due to a combination of its size, economic power, and PM, has little leverage. South Africans would stand no chance whatsoever. The US may have an unstable moron leading the pack, but they have a lot of economic leverage, and while I wish our president would STFU more often, I fully support any actions to promote reciprocity between the two countries. I'm totally with you on Hong Kong. My favourite city in the world. I have a good friend there, but I decided yesterday I won't visit Hoing Kong again. So it goes. Also with you on the situation with the two Michaels. Not much can be done, but I am not in favour of a prisoner exchange. Last year I read " Hostage in Peking" by Anthony Grey. An example of how hostage diplomacy works for the Chinese. Lets have a toast to Hong Kong, the old Hong Kong, as it was. Good luck to you and I hope your step daughter is doing well. She is better off in the US than China, despite current problems.
  5. So theres no money in being a shill for the CCP? At least Gweilo is getting some free trips (and maybe beer!) out of it.
  6. I'm presuming that's Michael Spavor he is referring to. The Canadian PM just this week explicitly rejected a trade of the two Michaels for Meng Wanzhou, the Huawei exec in the process of being extradited to the US. China is turning in to a fairly nasty place. Stay away from Hong Kong as well. I had heard bits and pieces of this before on some of their other various videos. He is lucky he got out when he did. Now days Hong Kong would not be safe for somebody in his position. Although I think as an American, he wouldn't be in as bad a position as other foreigners. Winston, for example.
  7. I wonder if he is getting subsidized for his meanderings to China's tourism hot (or cold) spots? His nose will be out of joint if he isn't included in the ten big-name Youtube channels being feted in Chongquing. He is a big Chinese media star you know.
  8. https://www.facebook.com/1145429832271380/posts/1756763577804666/ Chinese soft power in action! I wonder who the other nine you-tubers are? Will GreyLoud make the cut? Will any of them journey to Xinjiang and check out the holiday camps?
  9. Again, I watched a few minutes of "Lets talk China" the topic was 'China vs US, a new cold war?' Which could have been interesting if you didnt have such morons discussing it. A viewer question was " If a hot war erupted, would you fight for US or China?" You can imagine the blithering and obfuscations that ensued. I wanted to hear Gweilo's response, but I couldn't endure it for that long. 800 people viewing, which isn't too bad considering.
  10. I watched a few minutes of the "Lets talk China" livestream, there were 60 people viewing, and it seemed technically confused, you could watch on anybody's channel but one dude signed off and when I tried to switch to another channel it didn't work. I don't think they are making a big impact on westener's views of China. I note that youtube will delete comments with "wumao" in them , I wonder about "quisling" ?
  11. I'm not interested in the hour long chat sessions on China and I wonder what kind of audience they are getting. They are not archiving them and there is some kind of subscription needed to view, which seems like a goofy business model to me, but hey maybe it works.
  12. I generally agree with you, but what would we talk about if we didn't have people like him?
  13. I don't think they have any more surgery planned for the time being, do they? His style is to simply talk, with very little editing required. That saves a lot of time and trouble, relative to finding and piecing together snippets from several different sessions into a cohesive video. I figure that talking in front of his camera is therapeutic. Good for him. They were planning to go back this summer as his wife needed reconstructive surgery. Despite his lavish praise for all aspects of China, he didn't want her to get her surgery there. Don't know why. It just shows the difference between a professionally produced video and some dude just ranting at the camera. I would be interested in a translation of Weifang's comments.
  14. The key is to eliminate super spreader events, and then test trace and quarantine the minor outbreaks and life will go on. Much easier said than done of course.
