  1. By many Americans definition I'd have to say my wife is a racist. She's always saying white people this, Chinese people that, black people this, white people that and Chinese people whatever.....

When I was first in China in 1978, the Chinese fascination with white skin was understandable; I experienced the same fascination when natives in a village of grass huts on Zamboanga rushed around to touch me. All of that was many years ago but my wife (and many Chinese I know) often refer to the color line. ...and there is little doubt the Chinese way is better in their minds... :P

    So is this racist?

I really don't think so, but I suspect when my gal begins to interact with more and more Americans she will be flagged for this sort of speech.

Every human being is a racist.

The great thing about America is that if you hate them for turning your neighborhood in to a filthy crack cocaine gangland with no police protection, you are free to sell your great grandfathers house where your family has lived for 70 years and move to a different neighborhood

  2. Hi:

I love my husband and he loves me too, we got married in 2007 , my son lives with us too.My husband and my son have very hard relationship.my husband often yell at him. yesterday when my husband got to home i asked my son to help to carry some my husband bags , my son did, when my husband came to the house and started to yell at my son ,spoke very dirty words :"ass hole ,why you walked on the road instead of you walked on the grass, when you walked on the road ,the road became very slippery, you are ass hole" i felt very disappoint in my husband when i heard that . I think someone try to help you , you should say thanks even you are parents and i think parents and children should respect each other too,He said his words is order my son has to obey. When he got sick he said my son caused that and bring virus from school.....once my son was cut hair and he let my son go to bed after that, My son just washed his hair cos some pieces hair made him itch then he started to yelled at him about half hour........

I live pretty hard and worry about what happen tomorrow, think about my son graduated from high school in 3 years , It is so long way.

Is my husband wrong or my son 's

    CAN LOVE LOAD SO MUCH

    The husband is wrong.

  3. Very expensive piece of hardware. It is estimated that one US Aircraft Carrier battle group to build cost over $20 billion dollars.

    http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20081223/ap_on_...craft_carrier_1

They should be able to put out a state of the art, 1st Class vessel. I trust the PRC with 'em more than I do the Russians. (Hell, they'll wind up making 1 or 2 for the Ruskies, simply cuz they've got better technology and quality control.)

    Why bother?

Soon they will be able to buy them from the US Navy as SCRAP METAL.

  4. Hi All,

Well, since I don't know if that China-HK tunnel Tony mentioned is open to the general public ...

I need to figure out a different way to get from Hong Kong to the mainland.

    Couple questions:

    1. Are there any buses or other forms of transportation that go straight from HK airport to the mainland?

    2. I am arriving 10 PM. Would I be able to catch a bus that evening to the mainland (Guangzhou, Foshan, or Nanhai)? I'd actually rather not sleep in Hong Kong that night, but go straight to the mainland.

    3. If this doesn't work, any hotel recommendations? Should I book something before I arrive?

I am not a very detailed-oriented person UNTIL a big event comes upon me and I have those scary thoughts and visions of being in a different country and not having a place to sleep or figure out where I am going. Then I hit the panic button. This is just my modus operandi. Thanks everyone!

    Thanks,

    P.J.

    I took a direct bus to "Yantian-ShenZhen 'ShaTouJiao' Border Crossing",about 20 minutes and $30HK.

On the China side, just take local bus, about 20 minutes,to anywhere in ShenZhen.

YanTian ShaTouJiao is clean, quiet, and has several very nice hotels right in front of the border crossing.

    Good food.

    Nice walking.

A lot less hectic than the other border crossings.

    Good luck!!!

  5. the "middle class fantasy" has only been around for a short time.

Many citizens of our own nation are discovering the folly of every American moving into the middle-class as well... :(

Im no tree hugger, though I own a 1966 Dodge Dart I have been riding my bike everywhere local and only using automobiles to travel out of town.

Because of this I am regarded as "abnormal".

    I dont use cell phones.

    I dont fly.

    These are my rules.

Because of this I am regarded as "abnormal".

    My country is at war.

Because I dont ignor this fact I am considered "abnormal".

    I dont have ANY debt.

    I have GREAT CREDIT.

    Im not rich.

    Actually I am poor.

    Life is good.

    I eat what I want.

    I go where I want.

Because I dont want to be rich I am regarded as "abnormal"

  6. It is shame to see people loose their jobs anywhere. With the economic downturn things are going to get tougher in China. The frustration will grow as peole who thought they had finally joined the Middle Class are now being told go back home and work for maybe 100 yuan a month and it will be back breaking work form dawn to sunset. Beijing mission statement for 2009 will be " How we goin to keep them down on the farm".

(Or "You can take the country out of marijuana, but you can't take marijuana out of the country")

They did things the same way for 5,000 years, and the "middle class fantasy" has only been around for a short time.

I think they will be just fine.

  7.

China has a history of volatility, but this ain't it; at least not yet.

Do stay out of the neighborhood where this is happening and run for cover if it spills over into an area where you are visiting. You won't need TV or newspapers to know if its getting bad in the other major cities because you'll likely notice an increase in the police presence. Don't mess around, leave the country immediately if full scale rioting breaks out.

If things get really bad your gal may not be able to protect you.

Yes,if they are swinging sticks and rocks around, you wont want to be there.

GO FORBID you are driving a Japanese car,or in a Japanese restaurant.

I was in JingHong once for "Water Splashing Festival",people driving around in water trucks spraying EVERYBODY with water, and folks walking around with buckets throwing water everywhere.

Even some big plastic toy water guns.

OK,they saw me trying to sneak over to get some cigarettes and use the phone, and they all ganged up on me!

Ever see how Chinese people operate a car horn,or and "button operated" door or lift?

    A cell phone?

Absolutely NO patience, when they get their mind set on something.

(Notice the treeless landscape in China, and their immediate neighbors)

Its either ON or OFF,with no middle.

They push push push push push, until they get action.

I would hate to see how they operate automatic weapons.

If its anything like the way the use car horns,GET OUT FAST.

  8. Keep in mind media exaggeration. When there's a tornado some place you'd think an entire town was destroyed, but its usually just a couple of trailers in a trailer park.

Or some redneck attaching a CHURCH STEEPLE with a zip-screw gun.

The news reporter standing there on TV with a piece of something flying by in the background.

    Life threatening hurricane,or SHODDY CONSTRUCTION?

    (zip-screws,git'er dun)

  9. Why would a PRC person BUY this album? They can easily download it for free off the guns n roses myspace 'page'.

The Guns and Roses album "Lose Your Illusion" can be bought everywhere in China, and the song "November Rain" from that album is quite popular today in China.

I have seen many different Guns and Roses CDs for sale in China, but they ALL have the same album inside "Use Your Illusion".

  10. One thing I am curious about is Chinese humor. Story and joke telling. Does it exist? I get a sense from the Chinese movies I watched that Chinese and Westerns views of humor can be same, situational things that I thought were funny and were meant to be funny.

Anyone have any examples of stories or jokes that translate well to show that Eastern humor is similar or different than Western humor?

I know that some humor you must have a deep understanding of what the humor relates to, or there is no foundation to understand why something was supposed to be funny.

For example, my ex-wife was Russian, and they seem to love to tell Chuckcha stories. Kinda the way Western born Americans might pick on the immigrate polish. Some translated well, others, you had to understand something about Chuckha to know why it was funny.

I remember sitting down and watching Jerry Sinfield with her when she was here for a year or two, but she didn't laugh once. Then after about 4 years or so, she was laughing hysterically. She just wasn't fluent enough to get the subtle humor.

    TimB

If I play a Three Stooges,or Marx Brothers or some such slapstick,my wife laughs uncontrolably.

She likes modern TV and comedy DVDs also.

One thing,if jokes are being translated on a Seinfeld DVD,the punch lines are simplified, and the concept of "Soup Nazi" is not explained, rather they would just call that guy "really mean cook".

    The joke still works.

Much like it is IMPOSSIBLE to explain most jokes to deaf people, because they dont understand the humorous "word play".

Rhyming also has a lot to do with telling jokes.

I never had any problem explaining a joke in person to Chinese speaking people. They get it.

  11. Hi everyone,

I already posted that my fiance got white paper on Nov 3rd If she gets denied again on the new K-1 that I filed two weeks ago and hired an attorney to take care of old k-1 visa, and the new K-1 visa.

I am planning to marry her and move to China, I want to live in China until she get a visa then we move to US.

Do I directly apply to the Consulate in China, since I would be resident in China?

Is it faster to get visa directly from US Consulate in China?

How do I get a visa for residency?

    Thanks!

If you are having problems with the USA Visa, and you really want to be married to this person, then I suggest you just get married.

It WILL make the Chinese Visa easier on you.

You will be "married",so you will feel more free to make travel back to the USA alone if needed.

I stayed 2 years in China using SEVERAL 30 Day Tourist visas and extensions, and going to HongKong and Thailand every 3 months to get a new visa.

All this time I was afraid to return to America because we never could know when we would get the interview.

Just get married and feel like a human being again.

  12.

    Good news!

    NOT SO FAST VARMITS!!!

Wait until you read my other new post

"Green Card not enough for her" about how my wife

(Chinese female version of "Yosimite Sam") is behaving since she got

    her new Green Card.

    SHE IS OUT OF CONTROL!!!

Yep, I saw your other post, crazy!

Makes no sense, either visa K-2 follow-to-join or CR-2 for a step child require the consent of both biological parents the child's father has custody and the consulate will not issue a visa without the father's consent.

    http://candleforlove.com/forums/index.php?...c=34252&hl=

    Exactly!

    (But the pain is real)

  13. Sent the "Fiance Visa" application in about Sept 2005.

The Green Card arrived in the mail box (Tampa area) November 2008.

After arriving in America, the only office visit we made was for fingerprinting.

Then the EAD Card came in the mail.

Now the Green Card has arrived in the mail with no office visit or interview or telephone calls.

  14. I don't understand the purpose of you posting this story. Just involve the authority to aid this woman. Human rights is human rights and by the tone of your post... This woman is being abused.

Do the right thing Mr. Threadbare... Please!

I think the best thing to do is get her in touch with a Chinese speaking person who can explain her options to her.

Of course we have not been told of any abuse, and maybe she actually likes the guy,but there are RED FLAG situations going on here.

I want her to know her choices.

She could stay in our house, but I think its very important that an informed person explain all of her options to her BEFORE she decides to go anywhere.

If he keeps her isolated and she never learns English, she wont get her Green Card ,then she could get deported.

She was instructed at her most recent Green Card interview

"You need to learn better English in order to get a Green Card".

She is being isolated from work and has no opportunity to learn English.

Thats enough for me to see this is 40 miles of dirt road.

  15. He gives her $40 per month to spend in the Chinese supermarket

    (2 X $20 per month)

She has her EAD Card, yet she is not permitted to take any job outside the home.

    Her English is very poor.

Some neighbors ocassionally giver her meat and vegetables, but

when he eats it,he never questions where it came from,he did not pay for it and he never gives her any money.

She only cleans the home and does the yard work.

She was turned down for the Green Card, because she was not able to answer any of the questions, because her English is so poor, due to her being isolated in the home.

Even after all this time, the way they communicate in the home is very primitive.

She does not know her husbands salary.

THIS IS ALL DISTURBING TO ME AND MY WIFE!

We have been monitoring this for several months, and these are the most recent things she is telling my wife.

No Green Card,no job,no money for a ticket to China and no hope of exposure to the English language.

    I think she needs:

    1)To understand her rights.

2)Have a CONFIRMED "safe haven" she could go to if she ever decided to make like a tree and leave.

I had a bad feeling about this dude the minute I saw him.

This dude is a real piece of work!

(Met them in the supermarket.Strong looking honest north country woman. If you ever saw this dude,I dont think he is capable of having an "online relationship",unless he paid someone to do it for him.

Real trashy dude. You know, just look at his car and you can tell what kind of dude he is.Its not possible any American woman would be attracted to him.Creepy dude.)

I already know what you're thinking... What's a pagan like me doing talking about RELIGION???

Lately with all the bad news about melamine, mine disasters, intentionally contaminated food, etc. I've been wondering if China doesn't need some kind of ethical/moral guidepost for its people. "To get rich is glorious" just doesn't cover all the bases of human behavior... There is Confuscianism and I have read of party efforts to promote it. But what seems to be taking hold much more quickly is Christianity...So here's an article from the widely respected Economist on the growth of Christianity in China...

Certainly some very strange goings-on in there TB...

Most Chinese are in a rural situation, and many intelligent country folks can still be a bit "superstitious",so they easily fall prey to fast talking city slickers.

How many times have you seen some country bumpkin in front of a Chinese bus station, getting duped in to that 3 card sidewalk gambling trick?

The oldest trick right out of an episode of The Three Stooges, yet there are an endless supply of "easy marks" flooding in from the farm ready to be taken.

There are just TOO MANY vulnerable people in China, uneducated rural folks.

  17. I am NOT a Christian but only have a Christian upbringing...

ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh.... now I finally understand everything you post!

Good... :D Then you can 'splain it to me...

half of you got baptized with water and half with words... you have a split [religious] personality; half saint and half devil

Have you ever seen a badly translated Chinese restaurant menu?

Exactly WHO offically translated the bible in to Chinese language?
