  1. Great info! Thank you so very much.

Hi! I will be arriving in GZ on May 6th. I am looking for a driver who speaks at least a little English and can make him or herself available May 7th 8th and possibly the 9th. Would like to know rates if possible. I should be staying at the Yang's. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks

    Tony

I would try China Highlights Travel, I have used them for this type of service.

Sunny at China Highlights has been very helpful to me: sunny@chinahighlights.com (Email her, and let her know exactly what you want, and she will give you a quote)

  2. Yeah, I did the train thing from Hong Kong about 2 1/2 years ago and don't recall having to go through customs, but you never now with these things. Thanks!

    Tony

Thanks! Sounds like a plan. I will be arriving in HK and will take a train to GZ.

No, you shouldn't need anything. You might want to take a copy of your prescription if the medication does not have a prescription label with your name on it.

The simple fact is that entering China is usually the least scrutinized customs checkpoint on the planet. If you have nothing to declare, you just sail on through an entry point that is unmanned most of the time.

Do make sure you have your medication in your carry-on bag. If you are chosen to have your bags scanned, and they ask about the medication, just show them your prescription.

I took the train from HK to GUZ last year.

Dont remember seeing a customs check point there; just police dogs sniffing luggage.

  4. I will be arriving in GZ on May 6th. I am a diabetic and will have to take my medication along with me when I travel. May medication includes insulin, syringes, metformin, acarbos, glipizide plus blood pressure medication and finally medication for cholesterol. I have a printout from the VA which lists all my medication which I can take along. I don't want to take all the bottles as this will take up too much room. I have a travel case which I can use to take the medication which I will need during my trip. Should I be prepared to present any special documents when I enter China?

  5. Thanks! I sent PM a few days ago but have not received a response as yet.

  7. Hello everyone! It's been a long time since I have posted anything. I am planning a business trip to Guangzhou in May. The last time I went to Guangzhou (2 1/2 years ago), I stayed in a very nice apartment near the American Embassy. This time I would like to stay in a Hotel near the Embassy. Should be nice but does not have to be five star. Can anyone help.

    Thanks

Do you mean the embassy building in Sha Main or the one in Tian He (near the east train station)?

Hi! The one near the train station

    Thanks

  9. You should PM Toplaw, Tony. His wife is from there, still has plenty of contacts, and, I'm sure would appreciate your interest in music.

Thanks Randy. I'll look Toplaw up and send him a PM. Hope you and your lovely wife are doing well. Thanks again

  10. Hello everyone. I am planning a trip to GZ in March. This will be a business trip. I want to visit a few Violin shops in Xiqao and any shops in GZ and surrounding area. I don't speak Chinese and so I need to hire a driver who speaks English. I would like to hire this individual for 3-4 days. If anyone can help me with this I would really appreciate it. Please respond to this post or PM me.

    Thanks

  11. Got my SO some roses, and a beautiful card. She does not want to go out to eat because she thinks she is getting fat. I cooked dinner, but she hated it so I took her out anyway and gave her a driving lesson. :P

Many of are SO's have children , so what are YOU getting her and what are her children giving her if anything ?

Mine wants to go to the Movies and out to dinner ,

I have no idea what her daughter will be giving her , but in my case it will be limited to the $60 daollars I gave her to spend on a gift .

  12. I'm getting ready to file for my SO's AOS. I believe the fee is somewhere in the neighborhood of 325.00. I also heard that the fees are going up at the end of June. I'm sure that the questions has already been asked, but can anyone tell me if in fact the fees are going up at the end of June, and if so, how much?

    Thanks

  13. Yikes! How far is Nashville from Sugar Land, TX???????????? :(

Today the elderley woman to whom I am currently wed went to take the written test for her driving permit. I felt this was safe to let her do as the test is only given in English and transaltion devices are not allowed.

I'm not sure how she cheated but I'm sure she did. She has a shiney new driving permit and I am scared to death!!!!!!!!!!!!

  14. My SO has been here for a little over two weeks and already thinks she is overweight. She looks great and I keep telling her that if she decides to lose any weight she will disappear :P

I'm curious. I have seen a few very large chinese kids here in America but hardly any when I was in China.

How is your wife or her kids handling the weight problem with a Mcdonalds in front of them every 15 minutes and a little change in there pocket.

My SO actually thinks she is fat. I said Just wait till you get to America

  15. I attended last month. I went Friday afternoon around 2PM. Took a number after I went to the first window and told them I was there to attend ACH. I thought it best to attend since there is an obvious age difference between my SO and I. I also submitted some legal documents with my RFE and I wanted to discuss personally with a VO my situation. They seemed quite impressed with the fact that I was open and honest and noted our conversation in their system. I was told that all they wanted was for everyone to be open and up front about any issues. Seemed to work for me as my SO was approved within ten minutes after her interview began

Those links stop at April 2006.

Has anybody attended the ACH this year?

I want to attend the Friday ACH since I am doing a K1 VISA for my SO. We are already past 105 days with GUZ showing only the electronic copy.

--Flying to Shenzhen in 4 days to be with my SO. woohoo!

  16. There is a coffe shop on the 4th floor. You will have to go up the escalator in order to get to the 5th floor, the hang a right. She will not be allowed upstairs. There is a coffe shop on the 4th floor. There is also a 7-11 outside and to the immediate left as you exit the building. My SO decided to wait outside at the 7-11. Good luck!

    Hello All,

I am planning to attend ACH in GUZ during my next visit in May.....if my SO goes with me, is there a place, waiting room, etc, where she can wait for me? I know she's not allowed to attend the meeting....I'm not sure she can even enter the Consulate unless she has business there....

    Anyone know the answer?

    Steve

  17. Very cool! Congratulations and best of luck   :) :)

    Todd

    PS

  18. Just got back a couple of weeks ago. If she does not hold an American Passport she will not be allowed.

I am headed for Guangzhou in a couple of weeks. Limei's interview is may 24th. When I attend the ach the week prior can Limei attend it with me? Any other advice about the usefulness of ach? I just discovered what it was!!! Rob

  19. Thanks! I appreciate the great advice

    aclassic,

Sorry to hear about the rough time your wife has. I remember clearly I had kinda rough time too when I first came here--home sick, had to fix some pending issues, slight depression, being alone at home for too long and so on.

The main cause is it is really a big change of life style for me. I used to live a huge huge city where shopping malls, theatres, restaurants all within 5 mins walking. Now we have to drive everywhere, and everything so far away from each other.

I have to learn to enjoy the country life.

Thanks to my husband, who provide company, comfort, and good advice for me to work out the problems.

We found good Asian food markets in the neighbourood, we dine out frequently.(I love western food), we try to have a walk on the trail everyday, we make future plans on our yard and house, and so on.

I volunteer to work at the library, and it turns out to be a supreme experience for me(cause I love reading books), and I have been treated very very very nicely by them. Meanwhile, I got to know a few very nice friends too.

When I stay at home, I have my books, DVDs(I like wathcing HK TV drama a lot), and CDs, and recently, 2 cute cats, to accompany me. Somedays I cook, someday he cooks, we have Asian and western food in turn.

I still remember my early depressions and difficulties, and amaze how everything work out perfectly for us. We are very very grateful for all that.

You know what? My new home in State, the whole neighbourhood, the people here, already grown on me. I think I might be homesick if I am out of town!

aclassic, just be patient and please tell your wife be patient, it takes time, effort and mutual understanding to adjust to a new place. Hopefully 6 months from now, your wife will be happily readjust there and both of you can enjoy the pleasure of being together here in States.

  20. Yeah! I took her to Welcome Friday evening. Yesterday I took her to the Chinese Community Center but the people who offer the English ESL program won't be in until Monday. Classes don't start until June. We went to Hong Kong Market yesterday and she seemed to like the selection better than what she found at Welcome. I thought I would take her to Viet Hoa today but she seems to have come down with a cold. I really feel for her and want her to do well. She wants to work as soon as possible so I will try my best to help her. I hope Randy's wife is at Dun Huang today. I might swing by there today. Thanks guys

Thanks! Were does Randy's wife work?

Dun Huang. It's on the south side of Bellaire Blvd in the shopping center closest to the Beltway 8. There are a number of good stores along Bellaire Blvd - Dynasty, Diho, Welcome, and Hong Kong, and the Viet Hoa on Bissonet.

  21. Thanks! Were does Randy's wife work?

Yes I think the daughter would have helped a little. Also gives her some time with her own language while she adapts to you and others full time.

My wife brought her daughter but honestly for the first several days, she also slept and generally seemed a depressed, exhausted from school, and disapointed in a number of things in the USA as well as her English.

Well I wish you the best. Wife is in CHina now, and beside she didn't want to know anyone from CFL. She had aquaintances come over from China to go to UTA up here, but that only went so far.

Chinatown in Houston did more for her than anything. Take her to the store where Randy's wife works, and there is a pretty good hotpot resturaunt in the same parking lot toward the street. Beside we found better deals at that store over the others we looked in. That was the best I could do at the time.

Wish you the best and wish I could help.

  22. My SO has only been here a couple of days and I can see that she really misses here home, but most importantly her daughter. I was hoping that she would bring her along in order to make the transition easier but she decided to come first and bring her daughter later Having just gotten back from China myself I was not able to take any time off from work. She has spent most of her time sleeping and when awake I know she is thinking of home. Today I dragged her out of bed and took her to Chinatown in order to do some shopping and get her out of the house. My friend brought over a couple of Chinese movies. At first she did not want to watch but she is now sitting in front of the TV and we are drinking some green tea. I know that she will come around eventually. I need to try and support her as much as I possible can. I want to see if she can make some friends. There is a nice Chinese lady where I bank who wants to meet her. It would really be nice if some ladies from CFL especially the Houston area based ladies could volunteer their phone numbers so that they can chat and share some of their experiences.

  23. Tom

I returned home this past Sunday night from my trip to Guangzhou. I went there thinking that I had to do ACH on Monday. I arrived on a Thursday evening and on Friday morning Mr. Yang informed me that I should go to ACH on that Friday. I had filed for K1 visa. Needless to say Mr. Yang was correct. Got to the consulate and took a number. I did the ACH and was happy I did. You will have to go to the 4th floor and take the escalator to the 5th floor. Make a right and you'll have no trouble finding the line where you will state your business and take a number. You'll be handed a questionaire, so have your SO's info such as date of birth and GUZ case number. Good luck

    Tony

    Thanks to you both!

    Tom
