Here in Portland the Sellwood bridge was long overdue for a rebuild. Instead of building a whole new temporary bridge while they build a new one they simply built the temporary pilons and used Palmolive dish soap to slide the old bridge over onto the pilons. I guess there's something special about Palmolive that no other dish soap will do.

DAMN....remind me to never take a leak at that zoo...poor kid.
Monkeys are wild, they may look cute, but they can be viscus.
Monkey tears off eight-month-old baby's testicles
as his mother changes his nappy at a Chinese zoo and EATS one before it can be caught- Horrifying attack took place at Qianling Wildlife Park in Southwest China
- Chinese news report shows the infant recovering in hospital
- Monkey numbers at the zoo have recently exploded from 70 to 500
Horrifying ordeal: Chinese television shows the infant recovering in hospital with his mother after he had his testicle ripped off by a monkey. An old man reportedly picked it up but a monkey then snatched it out of his hand before scampering away and eating it before it could be caught. A Chinese news reports shows the baby recovering in a hospital bed with his mother looking over him. His injuries are not life threatening. Monkey numbers at the open zoo have reportedly exploded from around 70 to 500 in recent years with the situation now apparently out of control.

The number of monkeys at the park has exploded from 70 to 500 in the last few years, according to Chinese news reports
Although they are fed three times a day by keepers, members of the public like to feed the monkeys too and while there are signs warning against doing so, they do not seem to be enforced.
Other footage shows one of the monkeys attacking a little girl, nipping her on the fingers as she reaches over to pet it.
The report mentions that the monthly incidents involving the monkeys at Guiyang, of varying degrees of severity, are running in the hundreds.http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2413791/Monkey-tears-month-old-babys-testicles-mother-changes-nappy-Chinese-zoo-EATS-caught.html

Thats a lot of scenery in just 15 miles...almost like a different world. It's cool that you can experience that without getting on a plane. Are you an anomally in the small towns you encounter or are they used to foreigners now?
-
Really cool. How far do you ride to see all this?

Works for me. I used to be a pervert. Now I'm just flat sick.

Someone had a nice little wedding downstairs today
Kind of interesting that they are using "I heart U" in English.

Way before my time there but once, while I was in HK, I partied a little with a British Airways flight crew that was staying in my hotel and the pilot told me some horror stories about the old airport. Good times!!!

ok, I see what you're saying now. The devil is in the details. They do have some "democratically elected" officials in HK BUT I'd bet a dollar that the selection of those candidates was done in a way that was something less than a democratic process. As you say, the party operates in a very subtle manner, especially when they want to.
What I think will also be interesting to watch is whether or not the party will allow the selection and election of candidates through "universal suffrage" in HK which the National Peoples Congress has said could be done by 2017.
Seems like the same old same old, not really anything new unless I'm missing something.
The news is the occurrence of actual "democratic" elections in Hong Kong, which never occurred even under British rule - along with the involvement of the Communist Party. The Communist Party operates at a MUCH more subtle level than what we were taught in high school. So I found this an interesting tap dance around democracy, with lessons to be learned that might affect the future of "democracy" in China.
After all, "It's the Communist Party that brings democracy to China" - in their own words.
>"But overruling an elected candidate is not likely to happen," said Zhu, adding that challenging the central government will only incur side effects other than promoting the development of democracy in Hong Kong.
"It would be more meaningful to negotiate on how to improve the democratic procedures during nomination," Zhu added. -

Congrats on the visa. I've had to do the Chinese visa at the Chinese consulate in Hong Kong thing myself, no complaints though, the process to get the visa is pretty smooth. I have to agree with your Hong Kong comment too. It's very easy to have a great time in Hong Kong.

Have fun and congrats on the China wedding...it will be a great time...the Chinese families are always awesome at these weddings, always so accepting, generous and gracious, You'll have a great time. I don't kow what your schedule is but I've always found reasonable fares in November. A quick search of Orbitz and I found the fares below, granted they're not non-stop and it is Air China (not my favorite to put it mildly) but it does seem reasonable for a fight from Boston to Nanning. Check it out.
Your current trip cost
Flight Adult: 1 $954.00 Airfare taxes and fees $411.00 Service fee $6.99 Total due at booking $1,371.99
Additional baggage fees may apply.
