My wife's son (19 years old) was laid off from his job due to the economy last week after working there part time for the last 8 month. He has a 10 year green card, and I signed the I-864 for him during the visa process. Is he eligible for unemployment, and can they (The government) come after me due to signing the I-864?

Hi Rafi, good luck and good to see you're still around.
Dennis
Always a pleasure Dennis

How closely are their green card expiration dates? I believe if they are more than 3 months appart they can not be on the same I-751.
They expire on the same date Lee Thanks

My wife received her Social Security card a week ago, we didn't receive her son's yet. Should I be concerned ? If not, I guess I can contact the SS Admin office.
Does my wife need to do anything to be able to work since she has her SS# ? No rushm since currently she is studying for her learners permit... I guess we will have time to work on it together this weekend.
Charles, I had the same thing happen to me, my wife received the SS card a couple of weeks before her son. So, I think you have nothing to worry about. As far as work goes I think she can start working immediately.

It's time for us to file the I -751 for my wife and step son, who just turned 18 a few month ago. Do we need to file for him separately, and do we need to pay for him separately. I would imagine that We'll have to pay for his biometrics regardless, but what about the $465.00 fee?
If we do have to file for him separately, can we send both petitions in the same envelope with the same evidence, or does that have to be separate as well?
I get conflicting answers at visa journey and not sure what to do.

Bill, our divorces weren't "final" until the month before our 1st meeting and marriage. Having said that I did include detail dates in the letter on "evolution of relationship". Good Luck!Even though Li Hong had been separated from her husband for three years since we met, she has just recently gotten her divorce papers. No easy task sense they both live in Beijing but had to go to Changchun where they were married. It has been a couple of months and I plan on submitting my I-129F in the next few weeks. Is there any reason for concern or delay my I-129F because of this timing??
Thanks!
Same here. I met my wife for the first time approximately 1 month after my divorce. Had no problem getting approved. Good luck!

Oh, holy crap, they called your house in the States? I thought you were hanging out at Yang's hotel or something...
The consulate called us the night of our interview while we were still in the building. We didn't get any calls in the States...
That would creep me out a little. I mean; How old is your son? Is he old enough not to be fooled by someone pretending to be the Consulate? My gosh, I know that the odds of it being anything bad are a million to one, but please be careful! There are all kinds of nutjobs out there today!
He's 17 going on 18 next month. They called me and the number showed on my phone. It was definitely the consulate
The woman identified herself as a consulate employee and asked to speak to him directly. I asked her why, and she said they were doing a customer's service survey. Go figure..
-
My wife just got home from school and asked him exactly what they asked. (Obviously they spoke in Chinese). he said they asked if he was 'satisfied' with their service.
Yea right, the consulate is worried about losing customers
The strange thing is that they are already here. However we are waiting to apply for the 10 year green card, so maybe they work in cooperation with the USCIS . Who knows?...

Just got a call from the consulate in GUZ.
They asked to speak with my step son.
Why do you want to talk to him?
GUZ: we are doing a 'customer's service survey...
oooook
They asked him how he's doing and if everything is ok. He said yes, and that was it.
I think it was more like trying to see if he's with me and if we are fraud
I can't believe the 'Customer service' bit

Places are not boring, people are.. It's what you make of it. I mean if you can't find something interesting to do in the US you got problems.

I didn't know where else to post this. My SO brought a very good rice cooker with her from China. The problem is -- it's 220v. I've been to several stores to see if it can be converted to 110. Yes, I can find an adapter for the plug, but the cooker still wants 220v. Looks like I'll have to buy a new rice cooker.
Ron, you need a transformer from 220v to 110v

I know of one state that you shouldn't get married in:
CALIFORNIA
Now seriously, I hope it all works out for you. Think positive man!

My stepson received his P4 a week before the interview, and 2 days before going to GUZ. Talk about cutting it close! I did however email them several times, as well as faxed them letters rquesting the P4, which I think helped. I was told by DOS that changing the interview date is NOT a good idea.

Ron, you took all the delays and BS like a man . Wishing you and Ivy have a wonderful life together!

What baffles me is that in a recent poll, most USC's stated that their wife did not experience any culture shock in the US. I think this thread proves otherwise.I think our ladies hold it in a lot and that is the cause to this misconception. You bet they are going through a culture shock.
-
We plan on doing it as soon after the 3 year minimum from the green card date as possible. Although we hope to spend most of our time in China in the early years of our retirement, having laopo be a USC just seems to eliminate a lot of potential worries over keeping the US green card current. Who knows what future laws may be over eligibility, SS benefits, Medicare benefits, etc... In China we only need to worry about maintaining visas and I believe that will not be a problem at all...
What are the chances of the laws changing in China itself? Is it something worth worrying about?

When my wife and I go to China this month she will be taking a pound of ginseng, as far as I know this will not be a problem. Has anyone any knowledge in regards to transporting to China, she will buy it whole and have it sliced up here. She tells me Chinese feel American ginseng is number one, she will be taking it to give family and friends
Yeah we've shipped it and brought it with us. Never any problem...EXCEPT...you MUST buy WISCONSIN "SENG only the best will do and up here in Northcentral Wisconsin we grow the PRIMO stuff...trust me on this one...anything else is cr*p
WISCONSIN GINSENG...
Roger, Where can I get Wisconsin ginseng (Powdered)? I've been buying American ginseng at the herb store for a long time but I don't know where it's coming from.
