  1. Hello everyone. As I have advocated in earlier posts my wifes and I interest in chinese Singaporean television, I bring to you a new website from MSN. I went to mediacorp's website to sign up for their monthly online subscription to watch their programming but it said they were no longer accepting new subscriptions. The reason being is that they have partnered up with msn to bring their programing on demand for free through a new website. It is supposed to start in the next quarter but here is a link to the site. Here you will be able to watch content that is spoken in mandarin but contains english subtitles. The quality of most of their programs surpasses most of the ones my wife and i have watched from China in both quality of acting, scriptwriting, and budget. http://partner.sg.msn.com/xinmsn.aspx
  2. I wanted to stay with the funeral gig except that in order to do so I would have less that 30k coming in for the 1st year of mortuary school and about 28k for my year of apprenticeship. Unless you own your own funeral home which is harder to do because most are now owned by corporations then my current salary of 50k is above the median range for an embalmer. Now Singapore does perform Western style funerals but thats not easy to get into. Thanks for the suggestion but their has to be some kind of high paying jobs for a mandarin speaker which is why I am trying to find a suitable minor such as supply chain management or marketing for US firms in Asia, things of that nature.
  3. Hello all. Here is the deal. I am an automotive car designer making 45-55k here in metro detroit. I have been going to college to be a funeral director but the circumstances to work in that career would require significant financial difficulty based on my current income. So I have decided to change my degree. This is where opinions come in. I have always wanted to learn mandarin to speak with my wife and her friends as well as watch tv programs together. So I can switch my BA to major in asian studies which covers 3 years of language courses, history, business, and other elective classes. If I choose to go this route I could minor in Business, Journalism, or Marketing. We are not opposed to someday moving to a mandarin speaking country like China or Singapore. But I do not know what to minor in. I love writing, but think that with a minor in business i could do liaison work for American companies abroad. If were based in the US I would like to make between 55 and 75k a year. If we live abroad I would take less but would like a above average standard of living. What do you recommend? And do you know what jobs travel or living pay well enough to support my wife, daughter, and I for Americans that speak mandarin. Thanks
  4. My wife and I are hooked on shows broadcast from Singapore. It started with what I think is one of the best shows I have ever seen called "The Little Nyonya" and I just finished watching the show "Together". Both star a cast of Chinese and Singaporeans. They were also the year end megaproductions done by Mediacorp Channel 8. You can watch them on youtube. They are in Mandarin with English subtitles. They are excellent shows full of comedy, drama, and they pull on all the emotions. Together is a 36 episode drama that follows 6 people from 1967 through 1980's. It stars many of the cast members of the little nyonya. The little nyonya follows three families from ww2 through present day. It is 34 episodes and is very well done. Let me know what you think. 5. oh episode 1 of the little nyonya is kinda boring but it helps the story set up. So dont judge it by the first episode. I have seen them all and i still go back and watch. These are truly wonderful.

  7. my timeline is listed below it may be a little inaccurate but close, but we got married in hong kong and once we started the k3 route it took less than a year. if your married on mainland china it takes a bit longer becuase of more people comming here from the mainland. if your not married I recommend marrying in hong kong. If you or significant other are not from HK there is no advantage in getting an interview in HK, you will be denied and told to go to GUZ. They are tougher than you think contrary to popular belief. Trust me been there and done that. But if you want to get married in HK this is OK no problem it is quick and painless. If you go the K3 route and get married in Hong Kong you have to be processed in Hong Kong. My wife is from Taishan and the I130 was being prcessed at Guangzhou however when I filed the I129F later on we had to be processed in Hong Kong because that is where the marriage took place. My wife had already been here months before we ever got word on the i130 from GUZ.

  10. Skype: Is by far the greatest thing ever. We pay 10 bucks month and it covers all calls ll over the world. No time limit. We love love love it.
  11. My wife has a K-3 visa and we are doing the other paperwork now. She would like to go back to China when her friend goes this summer. Now I believe the k-3 is a multi-entry visa but we are curious if there are any problems when she comes back to U.S. customs? Because all her paper-work is submited there is no envolopes and what not to give customs. And is there any problem getting back in through china customs? Thanks for any help.

  14. Well this morning the dish network people came a installed our dish on the garage. We have been toggling between our regular american cable and dish networks Great Wall package all day! My wife gets 18 chinese channels that bradcast in mostly Manderin but she gets 2 channels in Cantonese. Anyway I love picking things up about the culture watching it even thugh I dont know the language and my wife couldnt be more happy to feel even more at home by being able to watch it. She has had plenty of time to get used to American shows and shut off chinese to watch Columboo, Emeril, and Iron Chef. Anyway I recommend this t oeveryne. It is only 30 dllars a mnth for many great channels including CCTV4, CCTV9, Beijing tv, Shanghai tv, Guang Dong statin, China movie channel, ATV and many more and even though its a kid program it has a english learning show on one of the stations. Again 18 stations, Dish Networks "Great Wall Package" for 30 dollars a month!
