Chinese translation edits parts of Obama's Speech
Jon & Jas replied to a topic in Culture & Language Discussion
Not at all. About five years ago, I was on a business trip in Shanghai. I had the TV in my hotel room tuned to CNN Asian while I was reading over some files. All of a sudden, I heard the words "Taiwan" and "independence" coming from the tube. It was a story about some demonstration in Taiwan against the mainland government. I was shocked that the story was allowed to air. Just as I was thinking that maybe the government has relaxed the media rules, the screen went blank. On the late night rerun of the same program, the entire story was blacked out. I guess someone was a sleep at the switch for about 30 seconds the first time. Hope he didn't get into any trouble... -
Maybe you should send in the rebuttal before the paperwork gets back to the States. After all, the letter said "should you, the petitioner, or your attorey have any questions concerning your case, make a request in writing to the CIS office where your petition was originally filed." It didn't say that you have to wait until the file gets back to them...

Pink it is... I got some details from Jas: The VO was a black man, middle aged. The whole thing took 3 to 4 minutes and went something like this: VO: I see you've been to the States before. J: Yes, I studied there. VO: What school did you go to? J: I went to XXX. VO: So did you live with your fiance when you were in the States? J: No. We lived separately. VO: Do you have his tax forms? J: I already handed in his 2007 tax return. You have it right there. Here is his employment letter and the 2008 pay stubs. [VO took the letter, looked at it and the tax return for quite a while.] VO: What company does your fiance work for? J: Ahh, I forgot the name. But he works in XXXX. VO: Is it a big multinational company? J: No, it's a medium sized company. VO: Have you met his parents? J: Yes, I have, many times, while I was in the States. VO: What kind of work do they do? J: One is a XXX, the other is a XXX. VO: Okay, everything looks good. And with that, she got the pink slip. I want to thank everyone who has been so patient with me during this whole process. And I'm sure I will be bugging you guys more in the future as we continue down this road States-side. Jas also wanted me to mention that she highly recommends the Jianguo Hotel, where she stayed the night before the interview. It is a four star hotel, beautiful and immaculately clean, and two minutes walk from the consulate. It is a little expensive, but it is very comfortable and the staff is great. They even upgraded her to an executive room for free.

Well, I didn't want to say anything since I don't know the guy, but combining GF and K3 in the same sentence had me a bit confused. Maybe his GF is married to some other USC while he has a very understanding wife... Hey Jon, No confusion ... he and his GF are probably discussing future alternatives ... you know ... K1 or K3 I know Mark, he's doing it right and taking things one step at a time Have a terrific day! Bob My apologies to Mark.

Congrats! It seems to be all pink on CFL the last few days. Granted, the sample size is small (3?)

My gal is really excited about the inauguration

Bill Clinton was actually a year younger than Obama when he was elected for his first term. It must be the gray hair... -
Yes Roger, you were very kind to point me to the website. I just wanted to see if I can get confirmation directly from the source with the help of a few interviewees. But I guess I really shouldn't burden them with this on their big day. B)

What Randy and Darnell said... You will have to know this eventually if you ever decide to become a naturalized citizen -

Answers to unexpected/odd questions at interview
Jon & Jas replied to Jon & Jas's topic in Consulate Process: P-3 ~ Interview
Yes, that's what I'm trying to prepare her for, so she doesn't get flustered if they ask a strange question. -
Good luck. Waiting to hear the good news...
-
We are doing some last minute preparations for the interview and I'm wondering if it's better to make up answers to unexpected/odd questions such as "What is his favorite professional sports team?" or "What is his first grade math teacher's name?" (completely made up questions, but you get the idea), or if it's better to just calmly say, "You know, we never really talked about this. It just never came up in our years of conversation. I guess there are still some things I will learn about him when I join him in the States."
-
Thanks. We are planning for the longer closure but hoping for the shorter one. This should affect everyone who's interviewing on the 21st and 22nd for pickups, if approved...

I always think pink... wait... that didn't come out right
