Transit throuth Taipei?

Heading over to US in April and from experience the best priced flights are HKG-TPE-LAX Lots of airline choices and good timing on the Taipei to Los Angeles route.

 

Problem is with getting the SO into/through Taipei. My HK travel agent say's no way, however one of my wife's Taiwanese friends says she can get document/travel visa from US consulate saying she is accompanying me to US and not planning to stay in Taiwan. I guess sort of a transit visa type thing.

 

Anyone have any experience in this? Thanks
