How to send RMB from China to the US?

Recommended Posts

We sent my brother in-law a copy of the K3 Visa and Denise's passport and he took it to the Bank of China in Urumqi. They said they need the original to change the money. This makes no sense to me, if we have the original (meaning us being there) why do we need to change money? I know someone mentioned before that the bank would allow you to remit a few times per year... so someone must be able to do this for us rather than us being present in China to do it.

It sounds like we're going to have him send it to a friend of ours in Guangzhou then change it there since she has a friend in the bank that will do it.

This is just another one of those things that really frustrates me about China. It is nearly impossible to get anything done.

If you are in the US, it is easy enough to change RMB. Just go to the nearest University, and find a Chinese student on an F1 and make a private transaction. They can not get a good rate on US$, so offer them something reasonable.

Too bad he does not have a passport because then he could take the Urumqi to Sharjah flight and go to the UAE and change it there. Wait, no, maybe the money changers there don't take RMB, I'm not sure. Well as far as the airport thing, the Urumqi airport seems like it would be a great place to try and contact some returning travelers with dollars in their pocket, everybody changes their money to dollars when they leave the UAE and go home to wherever they live.
