Cantonese opera is a 500-year-old art form found in southern China. SCMP went behind the stage of an all-children Cantonese opera group to see how these performers – some as young as 10 years old – are keeping the cultural heritage alive.

Man runs to stop empty plane rolling away
After all the flight crew and passengers have left, a plane in Baita airport, Hohhot, north China’s Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region rolled away from the gate. The ground crew had mistaken it for a departure plane, waiting to take off so the catch wheel was removed. Nobody got hurt in the incident.

BingoBox in Guangdong and Shanghai - in the SCMP

China’s hi-tech snack shops run into low-tech snag – summer heat
Cashless, unmanned ‘boxes’ are closed for air conditioning improvements after products melt

Quote
BingoBox opened the Shanghai store after months of testing the system in its home province of Guangdong. The second one followed just a week later, also in Shanghai, but in partnership with Taiwanese franchise owner RT-Mart. It, too, was shut on Monday while workers installed an air conditioner. The business model relies on a mixture of mobile phone technology, facial recognition software, and a smattering of personal accountability. Potential customers must first register with the company using their real identity. Once approved, they can enter by using their mobile phone camera to scan a QR code at the door, sending the data over WeChat. Inside, they choose the items they want, scan them at the register and pay either through WeChat or Alipay. A camera scans customers on the way out and anyone carrying items they don not pay for is recorded in a company database.

Disturbing and disrespectful: Audi China advertisement spotlights on women as "used cars for sale"
An Audi’s ad of selling used cars has recently sparked controversy online in China.
In the 30 seconds commercial of the automakers, a bride and groom was about to kiss at a wedding setting, when the groom’s mother suddenly interrupted. The next scene showed the mother marched forward and started to examine the bride’s facial features – squeezing her nose, slapping open her mouth, poking the back of her ears, and so on – as if to find any surgical evidence that shows implication of plastic surgery. The ad has been widely criticized for comparing women to used cars for sale, which is very disturbing and disrespectful.
More ironically, it is known that Audi’s 60-second ad for the 2016 Super Bowl was about supporting gender pay equality.

The People's Liberation Army has released the newest music video filled with masculine lyrics and advanced weaponry in an attempt to attract more young people to join the military.
The song, called "The Power of China", was posted on 81.cn, the PLA Daily's website, on Thursday.

"The Power of China": China's PLA highlights stronger army ahead of 90th anniversary

China on Monday urged India to immediately withdraw all troops that have illegally entered China, stating that China would defend its territorial sovereignty "at all costs."

"The Chinese border troops have taken initial counter measures at the site and will step up targeted deployment and training," said Wu Qian, spokesperson for the Ministry of National Defense, at a press conference.

Wu said the history of the People's Liberation Army (PLA) in the past 90 years has demonstrated its increasing capacities and unshakable determination to safeguard national sovereignty and territorial integrity.

"It's easier to shake a mountain than the PLA," Wu said. His words immediately began to trend online.
As Aug. 1, the birthday of the PLA, approaches, these words illustrated China's unswerving resolution to build a stronger army and guard the country's sovereignty.

Highlighting military reform, law-based governance and international reform, the armed forces of China are ready to embrace their big day.

An irresponsible captain was seen lying in a hammock for about 10 minutes while piloting a passenger ship on the Li River in Guilin, south China’s Guangxi province, on July 12, 2017. It is known that the local officers have been aware of the case and an investigation has been launched.

This is a LOT more than I've ever tried to do on a Hong Kong layover (my longest was 48 hours when I was waiting for my luggage), but still an interesting video from the SCMP

My dream is to find a British era bar, dark, quiet and musty - and get served a proper gin and tonic made by a bartender who's older than dirt.

How long would that take?

Second Dream: get measured for a custom fitted suit by a Hong Kong tailor and have it sent to my home. I would be happy for either, but would probably choose the gin and tonic first and have the memory of the experience die with me.
