Chinese Authorities Support Scrapping Birth Limits in Depopulated Region
To counteract some of the lowest birth rates in the country, three northeastern provinces have received the green light to consider new population policy.

Too little, way too late. Many of my wife's younger female family members are dead-set on having ZERO kids. Raising the upper limit to 3 or 4 or whatever isn't going to do squat in a situation where so many couples want zero (or exactly 1) child, or when so many don't even want to marry.

China’s central government on Monday said couples are now allowed to have three children as the country eases its birthing policies in light of its aging population.

China Introduces Three-Child Policy to Ease Aging Crisis
The new policy comes five years after China scrapped its one-child policy, which had allowed every family to have two children.

Though China saw a spike in births a year after the two-child policy was enacted, there was a decline over the next three years, confounding the expectations of officials and academics alike. In 2020, the number of newborns in China further plummeted to 12 million.

Well, okay - maybe a little more incentivization?

China Mulls Longer Parental Leave to Encourage More Births
Currently, the country does not have a national regulation on child care leave, while women are eligible for 98 days of maternity leave.

Authorities are actively seeking to address the plummeting birth rates, either by relaxing the country’s restrictive family-planning policies or providing incentives such as childbirth allowances or additional paid leave for new parents. The country currently does not have a national regulation on child care leave, while female employees are eligible for 98 days of maternity leave, as per the international standard.

However, such leave has not always worked in women’s favor. Companies have often been found discriminating against expecting mothers by either not hiring them or even firing them upon learning about their pregnancy.
