A New Time Zone

Recommended Posts

Not in China - in North Korea. It's actually a reversion to what was in effect before the "wicked Japanese imperialists" forced Japan time on the Korean peninsula over 100 years ago.

DPRK Sets up Its Own Time Zone by Turning Clocks back by 30 Minutes

DPRK will use its own time zone starting August 15, the official Korean Central News Agency reported Friday.

The new time zone will pull back its current standard time by 30 minutes, making it GMT +8.30, rather than GMT +9.

The establishment of a sovereign “Pyongyang time” was aimed at what it called rooting out the legacy of the Japanese colonial period.

South Korea has made similar moves in the past. Its time zone was set at GMT+08:30 -- the new Pyongyang time -- between 1954 and 1961.

The new time (GMT +8.30) is 1/2 hour ahead of China time (GMT +8), and 1/2 hour behind South Korea and Japan time (GMT +9).

especially after their rock concert

Hello, Pyongyang: Are. You. Ready. To. Rock.

Still, a performance by a Western rock band at a major concert hall in Pyongyang may have been a cultural shock for even those North Korean elites privileged enough to live in the showcase capital. Since taking power, Mr. Kim, who studied in Switzerland as a teenager, has tried to project the image of a fun-loving young leader open-minded enough to embrace some outside influence.

. . .

“There are all kinds of music,” the BBC quoted one attendee as saying afterward. “Now we know that there’s this kind of music, too.”

Wow, what a happy, snappy crowd at the concert!!!! From the look on many of the concert goers happy faces you'd think Jim Morrison had just pinched a loaf onstage when the camera caught their "enthusiasm". Maybe they were more used to nationalistic military parade music than some rock n' roll band. :rotfl:

What they need over there is a concert featuring Jay and Silent Bob :victory:
