Mick
I had read the story about the lady in Hubei who died in the escalator. Li and Salina are in China right now and it made me nervous about them visiting any malls with escalators. Li said the public outcry over this incident has been loud and angry. I would imagine some heads are going to roll. Initial reports say screws were loose on the panel that collapsed. What a horrible way to die, and her child saw (and heard) the whole thing. He will be scarred for life. Our prayers go out for him and the entire family. Link to comment
Randy W
More on that incident from the Shanghaiist on Facebook New surveillance footage has shed light on what transpired moments before Sunday's accident in which a woman was swallowed up by an escalator at a mall in Jingzhou city, Hubei province. Two mall employees riding on the escalator had just discovered the malfunction when they almost fell through the floor panel themselves. They then left to report the matter to management, but failed to first turn the escalator off. When they later returned to the escalator, Mdm Xiang Liujuan and her son were just on their way up. The two employees can be heard informing Mdm Xiang that there was a problem with the escalator, at which point she instinctively picked up the toddler with her arms. When she fell through the floor, she quickly pushed her son out of harm's way as one mall employee tries, but fails, to pull her out.WARNING: This video contains scenes that some viewers may find disturbing. Randy W
In the NY Times - "progress in China" Escalator Death in China Sets Off Furor Online While the Communist Party strictly controls the flow of information in China, officials have seemed more tolerant of stories involving transgressions committed by local leaders. “The media frenzy and the demands of the relatives are pointed at the company rather than the government, so the authorities are more open,” said Zhan Jiang, a professor of journalism at Beijing Foreign Studies University. “This is, of course, progress in China.” The party continues to routinely censor information it deems a threat to social stability, and it carefully guards its own image. In June, for instance, when a cruise ship capsized in the Yangtze River, killing several hundred people, it prevented journalists from going to some areas and instructed them to rely on official reports. This month, officials censored a widely viewed sex video made inside a Uniqlo fitting room in Beijing. After Ms. Xiang’s death, official news outlets joined the chorus of condemnation. “For the public, questioning and accountability must take place after such an accident,” an editorial on the front page of The People’s Daily said. dnoblett
Happened again... Woman escapes unharmed as escalator floor plate collapses in Shenyang No, you're not experiencing déjà vu, and yes, it's happened again. A woman in Shenyang, Liaoning province avoided certain tragedy when an escalator she was riding at a busy shopping mall suddenly malfunctionedImages from the incident, which occurred at around 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, show a missing footplate at the upper-end of the moving staircase. The pictures appear frighteningly similar to those from the freak escalator accident that occurred at a mall in Hubei on July 26, leaving one 30-year-old woman dead.Fortunately in this case, the unidentified woman in her 20s managed to narrowly avoid the gap that appeared when the top section of the escalator suddenly collapsed behind her. Greg.D.
For better or worse, here, we would have (by now) a nationwide inspection of all escalators and shut down this faulty model until a retrofit was available and installed on them. Guess that's "stating the obvious"! Link to comment

True Blue
Another tragedy... Escalator epidemic continues: Child in Chongqing killed after being stuck in metro escalator http://shanghaiist.com/attachments/alexlinder/chonqing_escalator3.jpg http://shanghaiist.com/2015/10/08/chongqing_escalator_accident_kills_child.php To me a lot of this is a DESIGN ISSUE. How about not allowing a DESIGN of an escalator where these things can happen. We don't seem to have this issue a lot in the United States. Someone should look at see what DESIGN flaw allows these tragedies to happen in China and then force the replacement of all devices with the flawed design. All it would take is for a Chinese law firm to partner with some ambulance chasing firm in America to sue the manufacturers and they would change the design. Link to comment
