danb
Hello. We have been to Shamian island a couple of times. I liked it. It has a European like charm to it. Wanted to see some of the shopping streets but never got a chance. Randy said: "We found plenty of clothing in my sizes - XXXL for shirts, XXXXL for jackets - so I may want to go back in the spring when we can buy summer clothing. They had sizes up to XXXXXXXXL (count 'em yourself, as long as you get EIGHT XL). In Yulin, it seems like the largest size available is usually one size too small." Are those sizes available everywhere in Guangzhou or in particular areas? By any chance do you know any places to get XXXL and XXXXL sizes in Nanning? Danb Link to comment

Danb My wife knows the area near Shamian pretty well from back in the days of her family business, back in the 90's. We looked in a few stores before settling on one because of the sizes available and pricing. We stayed at the Guangzhou Hotel in Haizhu Square and the store was nearby, near the Culture Square (that's as close as I can pin it down) - I'm sure there are others. We haven't done much shopping in Nanning, but I did buy a couple of things at the Wal-Mart. They seem to be size, quality, AND price-challenged, though. The thing I've had the most trouble with is shoes - my size is 11W, and I haven't found ANY wide sizes anywhere in China, including on Amazon or Taobao, even among the American brands that sell wide sizes in the U.S. But I found that it costs about the same to buy them at a discount in the U.S. and have them shipped. Doug
Boy do I ever agree with this thread. I was VERY impressed when we were there for the interview. I have been too busy but will post more pics in the interview thread I started, and maybe I have some for here too before long. Most amazing buildings with a wide range of architecture for homes as well. Everything was just comfortable in Guangzhou. Easy on the eyes. Blue sky the day I was there. Link to comment
Randy W
The sun doesn't set over Guangzhou - it just DISAPPEARS into the haze. This is especially scary to me since it seems to be a layer of particulate pollution. Edited January 3, 2015 by Randy W (see edit history) Link to comment

The territory was divided into two concessions given to France and the United Kingdom by the Qing government in the 19th century. Today, the area has a mixture of both the European and Chinese elements. There were small bronze statues scattered around the island depicting life in the area, past and present. Today, we are telling the story of the sculpture of a young governess playing violin, and four small children following her while a fifth boy tries to catch up. The children were blind. Their light was the young governess who used sound to lead these children. Which story do you wish to hear next? Edited January 3, 2021 by Randy W (see edit history) 1 Link to comment
