Well at least I thought it was interesting. Sun Yat Sen is admired by both the governemnt in Beijing and by the government in Taiwan, I believe. Is there a 500 Yuaan bill being used today in China? Danb

The first time I heard Sun Yat Sen name was from my 7th grade French teacher, Mr. Roger. He claimed to have met the man.

That would be roughly like someone trying to use Confederate currency in the States - not exactly legal tender.

This, from Wikipedia, tells a different story about the value of that note. The face value would be 500/10,000, or about 0.5 jiao, or less than 1/2 cent

As the communist forces took control of most of China, they introduced a new currency, in banknote form only, denominated in yuan. This became the sole currency of mainland China at the end of the civil war. A new yuan was introduced in 1955 at a rate of 10,000 old yuan = 1 new yuan, known as the renminbi yuan. It is the currency of the People's Republic of China to this day.

From the WSJ - A 500-Yuan Bill? Don’t Hold Your Breath

the Wikipedia article (which has a LOT of information about the history of Chinese currency) - Chinese yuan

I saw that the other day, someone in line or perhaps working the counter if were a collector should have offered the guy at least the price of the ticket for the obsolete note.

A friend of mine came across a pre-revolution Chinese note he gave it to my wife, I will have to scan and share a pic of it with you all.

Dan, I still get a kick out of running across old US money. Two dollars bills, silver certificates, old and silver coins. I like to find the old nickels with large mint marks on the backside of the nickel. Also love finding silver coins. Back when the casino's had slots machines that required you to use real coins one could hear when a pre 1968 coin would occasionally drop into the winne's tray. A silver coin dropping into the tray sounded just a little sweeter. Danb

Yep, I have collected the odd coin and bills from circulation.

A year ago my wife and I were at an art fair where there was a vendor who would take older coins and make jewelry from them, I bought my wife a necklace that has a 1964 Kennedy Half, the 1964 Kennedy was the last year for silver, and the first year for JFK, it is also my birth year.
