My Computer Broke

Recommended Posts

I want to swap out the motherboard and the system disk, and, while I'm in there, upgrade to Windows 7.

The question is this - if I buy Windows 7 disk here in China, will it include an English language installation - both the installation and the installed O/S?

See if you can buy Ultimate Edition, it has the ability to change the User Interface between languages.

I use Windows 7 Enterprise at work, it is the same as Ultimate, and the only versions that provide alternative language interfaces.

Randy, I've never seen an English version of Windows sold with a computer in China. That doesn't mean they don't exist. You might try taobao.com or amazon.cn. Taobao has a lot more options available, so suggest you look there first. Amazon and Taobao will deliver to your door often within 24-hours.

You may have to buy a disk with Chinese Windows, or you can just reinstall Win 7 later.

I want a Windows 7 installation CD, so i can install (Hopefully, upgrade from the XP installation) so, that'll be perfect. I hope they'll have that here at the computer store.

Be careful of the small computer stores as 99% cannot speak English and are usually not honest about what's in the box. They'll sell it to you and when you find out it's not what you wanted, they will refuse to exchange or refund. Try Suning, or another larger store.

No, Jesse - the girls here don't speak more than a word or two of English, but they understand computers much better than Jiaying does, so it's not a problem. At this particular store, I don't think you'll find a fake anything anywhere

They apparently don't sell the Windows 7 CD's - but instead install it themselves. I don't know if that's an OEM or a bootleg version, but Jiaying's XP computer passed the Microsoft certification. Looks like I'll buy the Windows 7 installation CD from Dan's link, but everything else was at the store. They'll put it together and deliver it tonight. Excellent service, including warranty service from Western Digital

By the way, it looks like we can't make it out there right now - the return trips Guangzhou to Yulin are booked solid for the duration. Hopefully, we can get with you sometime soon.

Sadly the win 7 DVD does not upgrade a machine from XP, it moves XP into a folder and installs 7 into the machine, all apps from before do not run, you will need to reinstall them.

Well, that settles that! That's not too shabby, since I could staand to clean up the mcahine. It'll just take a LONG time to get back to where I was.

I've got it up and running now on the pre-installed Windows 7. It's looking good as far as a working machine, but it's all Chinese and I've never used Windows 7 before! I definitely need to reformat the harddrive (only 32MB for the Windows partition), so it looks like the next thing is to get the Windows 7 Ultimate install disk.

They had also disabled the onboard video for me, so I could install my own video card. I's one of the Microsoft moments when you turn your computer on and you have no clue why there's no video.

Have they ever sold a computer in China that didn't have Microsoft Office 2003 pre-installed? Don't answer that!

So far, I've been able to verify that I DO have Windows 7 Ultimate. But in trying to download the English language MUI, well - Windows Update is all Chinese! One more hurdle.

look for the english mui on the vistalizator website. I just successfully changed the display language on my old laptop running win vista home premium edition to Chinese language using vistalizator. Was not difficult at all
