Guest ExChinaExpat
I just noticed that in today's news that the new Korean girl pop-group "Girls' Generation" nailed the number one spot in the first YouTube video awards. Some say this is the wave of music in the future. Who can say? Nevertheless, it's bears merit to see what the hoopla is all about. Rather nice watching several hottie asian girls dance and sing on screen. Take a look at a sample: Korean pop is very popular in China. What do you think of these girls? Will the US begin to warm to Asian pop music? With a perky performance on CBS' "Late Show with David Letterman" and a guest appearance on "LIVE! With Kelly!" earlier this week, K-Pop sensation Girls' Generation have begun barnstorming their next target audience -- the United States. The response? "Just saw a bunch of really really hot Asian chicks on Letterman," tweeted one viewer. "I'm not sure who those girls are on Letterman but I think I'm a fan," tweeted another. The Korean media also made much of the fact that Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe said on "LIVE! With Kelly!" that he has a Girls' Generation CD in his possession, despite the fact that he said he has not listened to it yet. So what will the mainstream U.S. audience make of Girls' Generation? Korea Tourism Organization, for one, are banking on K-Pop to bring more visitors to Korea and have hired the girls as honorary ambassadors. We asked fans in the world's largest consumer music market to preview the band's latest video, "The Boys." Korean pop is very popular in China. What do you think of these girls? Will the US begin to warm to Asian pop music?Josh, 22, Indiana [says] "They're pretty, but their type of beauty doesn't match the kind of "American sexy" they're trying to emulate. It comes out as awkward." Edited November 5, 2013 by Randy W (see edit history) Link to comment
Randy W
Similar Japanese groups have made attempts to break into the American scene - to no avail. Morning Musume has been going strong (VERY popular in Japan) since 1997, with enough members to have several concert tours going simultaneously - no traction at all in the U.S. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ttrjMWyd4II One of the original attempts to break the American market (through the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson) was Pink Lady. They even had their own TV series, Pink Lady and Jeff, for a while http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XS51heRa1-E Edited November 5, 2013 by Randy W (see edit history) Link to comment
Randy W
One performer - Hikaru Utada - was even born and raised in Brooklyn, New York in an effort to breed a cross-cultural performer from 2 Japanese (entertainer) parents. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mlwCZm2MQbQ Link to comment
Randy W
Some of the performers the Japanese have ferreted out through their "idol" system are quite good and very polished - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japanese_idol http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d8uWI4KH_ZQ Link to comment

Mick
Although I am far from an expert on the popular music scene, on a scale of one to ten, I would give the music a rating of around three. As eye candy, however, I would say they are off the charts. Still, I am partial to the 12-Girl Band from China: Link to comment
Guest ExChinaExpat
Randy, Asian groups have been out there for years. But, this is the first time in history that an Asian or Asian group has ever won, or even had a decent showing in a Western contest. YouTube is entirely an American based company, so this is very unusual. Mick, yes, I really like the 12-girl band. Edited November 5, 2013 by GuangDongExpat (see edit history) Link to comment

Perhaps these girls can even follow in Pink Lady's footsteps and 'win' their own TV show. My point was also that there's a lot of talent out there, whether K-pop, J-pop, or C-pop, that just goes unrecognized by western audiences - tsap's is a good one (K-pop). Here's another good one - seems to me that this would be a big hit in the U.S. But Japan is certainly unique in the way they've developed this talent - to the point of having different classes of "idols" - from Wikipedia gravure idols (グラビアアイドル gurabia aidoru?), who are glamour models in Japan that are generally more provocative than regular models and idols, though not to the point of posing nudeAn AV idol (adult video idol; AV actress (AV女優 Ēbui joyū?)) is a Japanese idol who works in the pornographic business, often both as an actress as well as a model as the video performances have a wide range, from just the idol strolling around their house doing chores in bikinis to hardcore porn.
